Wearing a different sized watch depending on your clothes

I have a 44mm Pilot style watch which I really like however when I have a shirt on for work it doesn't fit under the sleeve. It just doesn't look right and feels like more of a casual style watch.

I'm thinking of getting a smaller watch for everyday office use, I have my eye on the below Botta, although its only 28mm and I'm worried it would be very small.

So should you wear a different sized watch depending on what clothes you are wearing ?

I change the style of watch depending on what I'm wearing, not so much the size. I have 5 watches ranging in size from 36mm - 44/45mm. The big one (Getat Pam Hommage) gets worn more with casual stuff but I have worn it into work with a shirt on occasion.

28mm is very small, like I mean childs watch small, if you are looking for something small ish, that will fit under a cuff, go onto ebay and do a search for Seiko 5, then take your pick from the hundreds on offer from about €70 up to maybe €180ish

Absolutely, I change my watch to suit my outfit. Usually with a shirt/suit I'll go for something smaller and slim like a Sekonda Deluxe (pics to follow).

If I could afford a Botta I'd really fancy the Uno singlehanded design. http://www.botta-design.de/en/einzeigeruhr-uno.html

Yeah, really like those single handed Bottas. I think that if you can pull off a 44mm pilot with casual gear, you'd easily be able to wear the 40mm Botta with a suit, as it's only 6.9mm thick.

Don't get the 28mm watch -it'll be too small

28mm is pretty tiny TBH and this coming from a vintage nut here. Where mens watches were a lot smaller than today. Even with my scrawny wrists 30mm + would be a must. That said the smaller sizes tend to more comfortable and less intrusive. I bought a 40's Longines Weems that looked good, but was teeeny on the wrist and looked a bit daft(28mm too)

Don't get me wrong I like bigger watches, but some of the monsters out there today look odd to my eyes. 42mm would be my personal limit and at that it would want to be well designed ergonomically. Thickness makes a big diff too. A 38mm wide watch with a 15mm depth is gonna be a lot more unwieldy than a 42mm with an 8mm depth. Curve of the lugs and overall design comes into it too.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Regarding lug width, a watch can be big but have short lugs. My basic rule is don't let the lugs extend over the wrist and you should be ok. 44mm is my biggest watch, the lugs are very short and to my eye it makes the watch seem smaller than it actually is.

I don't co-ordinate at all but I don't wear my 45mm diver with a suit as it's very chunky. Personally I won't wear anything under 40mm at a minimum. It's just too small on my wrist.
