Not exactly in the same vein but you could try the Korean vengeance trilogy:

    Sympathy for Mr Vengeance
    Old Boy
    Lady Vengeance

The stories aren't linked to each other but all are quite dark thriller movies

Tons of French thrillers, Mesrine and A Prophet being 2 great recent examples.

Edit: And from every other country on earth too of course.

As mentioned above, if you haven't seen Oldboy yet that should be your first port of call!

Also check out La Haine, Infernal Affairs (Departed is a remake of this), Mesirin and Hidden. Also the Danish TV series 'The Killing'.

If you like this you may want to catch Borgen which starts on BBC4 tomorrow (Saturday).

Just watched 'Transsiberian' last night which I recorded from BBC4 the other night. Was actually excellent! UK/US principal cast but very much a 'foreign' production. Best described as Strangers on a Train meets Fargo (without the humour).

french film 'tell no one' is really good!

it's not quite the same as the girl with the dragon tattoo, but kinda similar in a lot of ways. an old crime, a cover up, and a bit of a conspiracy. so you should like it :)

I like Hitchcock so two of my favourite foreign language films are Hitchcock in tone. One is Korean - "Mother" with fantastic visuals and a certain Asian oddness that you dont find in the west.

and also Le Boucher a French thriller by Claude Chabrol (who died recently) who produced a string of quality films.

    Mr 73
I got a copy of it recently and thought it was a good movie.Well worth watching.Daniel Auteuil is a great actor.
A washed-up Marseilles cop (Auteuil) earns a chance at redemption by protecting a woman from the man who killed her parents as he is about to be released from prison

Another good movie I seen a few years back.
Leo Vrinks (Auteuil) and Denis Klein (Depardieu) are at the head of two different departments of the Paris police force, located at Quai des Orfevres. Once close, they are no longer friends, mainly due to their differing work methods and Vrinks' wife, Camille.

An audacious gang of robbers stage seven armed robberies throughout Paris leaving a bloody trail in their wake. After a year of terror, the Chief of Police orders that Vrinks and Klein bring the criminals to justice with a substantial boon to the man who brings them in... His job. As the competition between the two men hots up, the lines between right and wrong become blurred. Both men find themselves sinking into a hellish place not far removed from that of the criminals

I know I shouldn't be but I'm always surprised when somebody watches this film and then doesn't enthuse about it.

I really disliked La Balance. I thought it was a French derivative of a made for TV American cop film. Granted Nathalie Baye is easy on the eye though.

    The skin I live in

    Martyrs

    I saw the Devil

    Das Experiment

    Confessions

all good movies, some including myself will say great, only the tip thats out there. I will watch the originals with subtitles, rather then hope someone makes a carbon copy of it just so its in english. Noomi Rapace is Lisbeth Salander in my eyes :)

Might be because the Director was American. Cant remember his name but Bayes love interest in the film (the crook) died a few years later from a drugs overdose.
