    Apologies for the very beginner question here, I went for my first ever timed /tracked run tonight with an app on my phone. Have decided to do some training to build fitness over the next few months. I have done zero fitness work in about 5 years now.

    My question is, a distance of 1.87k in 10:54 seems extremely bad to me, or at least I thought I would manage it quicker and without stopping to walk three times. Am I wrong to be disheartened by the time and effort it took for a relatively Short distance?

    Yes, you are wrong to be disheartened. If you haven't done anything fitness wise in 5 years, then don't worry about timing, pacing or performance right now. Just go for easy 15-20 min runs as a first step, may be 3 times a week (alternate running - walking if 20 min runs are difficult to complete) and depending on where you are / how you feel / how fast you improve, then move to 30 min jogs in about 4 weeks.

    And if you really want to time yourself again, do your 1.87k loop and see where you are (i.e., time and feelings).

    These are just few ideas, you could do something more structured but after a 5 year break, it's better to go slowly and set achievable goals (i.e., getting back to running regularly in your case).

    Thanks very much for the response, I think I was expecting a little too much and I think maybe I went a bit mad at pace early on swell. I'll be back at it now in a day or two and will just stick to that until I can finish it pretty comfortably without stopping. I have to say, it was good fun, I was actually surprised I was enjoying myself!

    Instead of running the same loop again and again, trying to go faster each time, you should follow a proper structured training plan. Couch to 5k is a good one, and there's a thread here you can read and join.
