I'd say in a private sale probably somewhere between €5500-€6500. Sounds like a nice example of a good car.

8,300 from a garage with 3mth guarantee seem a bit pricey do you think?

    This one?

Price looks about right relative to the rest on there.

    Lot of money though.

    Here's a petrol in Mayo for 2300.

or an 03 Diesel in Louth with belt done for 3200

Tis a good few quid alright but it seems a nice car and I feel I can't take the chance of buying something from Donedeal which could turn out to be a Turkey and completely break me.:(

I've been put off Trajets aswell which are very cheap in comparison.

Apologies I thought you were selling, not buying. Price seems a bit steep to me although the six months tax is worth about 300 quid anyway.

Is that car a UK import? The Ford/RAC sticker looks odd for an Irish car. Two owners since it was imported or two owners in total?

BTW thats a VW engine AFAIK, 1.9 TDI PD, so use VW servicing instructions if you buy, not the Ford ones.

    Best of luck.

Get a mechanic you trust to go over the something from donedeal and if he gives it the green light, buy it. Save yourself €5,000 ;)

Which engine's in it? The mondeo of that era has fuelling faults that ware seriously costly to fix, along with the usual stuff like DMFs etc.

I'm not sure tbh, would the mileage be questionable do you think if it was an import with more previous owners than just two registered here/

Have a quick look on Carzone there going for 4,500 euro up. If its decent You should have no Probs selling it with it being a diesel and plenty of room. Good Taxi. Drop a couple of cards into the local taxi offices, might get it sold to one of the Lads in there...

Ah here, don't say things like that, I feel unsure enough about it as it is!

Seriously though is 8,300 to much for this year and model? Even if it turns out good & reliable?

I'm bringing it to my mechanic next week and if he says it's good I think I'll get it, I'm really stuck for a family car atm so I need to get something fast...

Hi Colm, is it an import? Can you tell by the Reg?

And if it is, does the '04 plate mean it was first bought in that year or just registered here in '04?

It doesn't look like its an import as the number is quite low(1600ish).

The 04 plate means it was first bought in 04. If you went to England and bought an 04 today and registered it in Ireland tomorrow it would have an 04 plate on it. The registration cert would only show 1 owner (you) though!! It won't show previous owners from another country.

Are you serious? You're getting the bare minimum warranty and paying way over the odds.

If you get a private sale checked out properly by a mechanic, do a history check and buy it at a lower price it will work out cheaper for you. Even if the gearbox blew in the morning you will have saved enough to cover it.

I really HATE seeing people getting shafted but the dealer must be over the moon with this deal. If I were you i would back out now. And again three months warranty?!? That's what they are entitled to give by law!

This will be the first 'proper' car I will have bought so I know I might seem quite naive. My mechanic had said it seemed quite pricey for the year considering it didn't have 'all the bells and whistles'. We had asked him to keep an eye out for us and he knows someone who is expecting a few cars in at the end of the month. I might just let him get one for us!

Send him up to Louth with his torch, a few rags and a magnet.

Keep the 5k for yourself man. You're talking to people here who have done all that and buy cars for fun almost.

There's an Estima for 600 Euro that doesn't need much - you could buy that and scrap it 10 times over for what you're talking.

8 Thousand is huge huge money these days in the market and indeed for most individuals.

If your mechanic gives it the thumbs up then you're laughing :) (it's a far better feeling to drive a well sorted bargain with money in your pocket than worrying about a big layout)

    Horses for courses though ...

Here's an 06 Seat for €6950. I think 8300 is mad money for an 8 year old Galaxy Lx

I wonder if that Alhambra is Irish reg though?

The Galaxy is very over priced for an 8 year old car.

It's the price variations that confuse the bejaysus out of me at this stage though. Other '06 Seats are thousands more than that one!

I mean look at this Trajet for under 5.5K.

Why are these so cheap in comparison to Galaxys?
Are they crocks of sh!te or what?!

A Galaxy, Seat Alhambra and VW Sharan of that era are all the same car.

Better cars than the hyundai too.

I'd much prefer either of those three than a Trajet anyday, but my dilemma is that the cheapest Galaxy/Sharon/Alhambra I can find without what I would consider huge mileage, is not under 8K.

I'd rather buy from a garage but they are all the same high prices for those models.

I don't want to get a Trajet only to end up wishing I'd got something else instead.

A lemon is a lemon and garages can sell them too.

I got stung big time with a sh1tter from a reputable dealer and lost thousands.

Once they're off the forecourt you're fighting an uphill battle.

I think it's expensive at that, I would do as has been suggested already and save yourself money "Donedeal". If needs be have a mechanic check any potential purchase for you.

Up until a few years ago I would have been of a similar mindset, dealer=piece of mind. However when your talking a 3 month warranty, the premium you pay is way over the top and the specific one your looking at it mental money. The small cost of getting a mechanic out to check a few motors over is by far better value compared to a 3 month engine and gearbox warranty that you'll get on anything of a similar era from a dealer.

As well as the checks your mechanic will do, you have to weigh up the seller in a private sale as well. Have they serviced the car while in there ownership, are they selling it from there house or on 'behalf' of a friend, does there mobile number pop up all over google? A motorcheck.ie report will also be worth the money.

OK, thanks all, I appreciate your advice.

What do you think would make this worthwhile.

An extended warrenty, a few hundred quid less, a few thousand quid less!?

How much would y'all be comfortable paying for such a make & model?

    Cheers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,921 ✭✭✭Gophur

Be aware, these MPV are fragile. The build quality is not great and you will find little things in the cabin are not durable and will break.

Check out www.honestjohn.co.uk car by car breakdown for all that's good and bad about any used car.

€8,300 is ridiculous money for a car of that vintage. You'd save a fortune by buying the 2.3 litre petrol one in Mayo, and that's saying something.

    A '05 Galaxy is not worth much more than €7k, a '06 €8.5k.

For a class of car that will be abused, due to their nature, there is not much to be found in terms of reliable, well-built cars. The Espace and Pug/Citroen cars are no great shining examples, either, all having good engines but being let down by overly complex electronics and poor quality fittings.

Offer him 5, settle on 6. At that you're still bonkers and it won't happen anyway :)

All them MPVs are horrible anyways. They're just a van with windows. unless you have a fairly big family they are practical.

As for the 3 month warranty that a dealer will provide you, the reason it's only 3 months is that generally any issues that are not apparent at time of purchase, will not show within 3 months either.

Actually, warrantydirect even state this on their website when you buy a warranty for any car..........

"If you are extending an existing manufacturer's warranty or we have inspected it prior to coming on cover - your wear & tear protection will start from day one - otherwise your vehicle's wear & tear cover will start after the first 90 days. We adopt this policy because our years of experience have shown that wear & tear failures arising in the first 90 days on cover are almost always pre-existing faults that were apparent before the vehicle came on cover."

Just thought I'd give an update on what I bought.

That '04 Galaxy for 8,300 was indeed ridiculous money!
I settled for a '04 1.9TDI 130BHP for 6,400. It's in very good nick inside and out, 113K miles on it but I'm pretty sure it has been looked after and my mechanic checked it out and thought it was a genuine car.

I've never driven a Diesel before and this thing feels really nice to drive, feels very powerful and responsive in second and third and I can bait down the M50 like nobodies business and it doesn't feel like it's putting any strain on the engine, it's lke it drives itself compared to the petrol Scenic I had.

Heaps of space in the back and I kind of like the large van type shape!
