Not so sure this guy should be preaching about safe driving- It's clear he was driving too fast for the conditions. *Edit* - Possibly NSFW

I havent watched that video but you some people think driving in the snow is next to impossible and your a menace if you do it.

During that last big snow I had people waving fists at me as I drove past them up a hill in my Punto (equipped with winter tyres)

You should watch it, it's a good un :)

Man was he lucky to avoid the cars in front and the truck ploughing through.

It's more about the visibility than the snow, he has no idea that the cars are stopped until he's on top of them.

If you read the description he said the storm came out of nowhere, which is the reason he turned on the recorder, and then he sees the crash 4 seconds later. He did well imho.

I did read the description and yes, he did do well to avoid it. But, I still think he should have slowed down a lot sooner. He had time to turn on his cam but not to slow down??
Also, you can see how bad the visibility and road conditions are for the first 3 seconds and he still seems to be on the throttle.

Didn't bother stopping to see if the occupants of the other cars were alright either....

The scariest part is the artic lorry that comes flying through just after the collision. If that crash hadn't happened, the artic would have done it instead and an almighty mess would have followed.

It wouldnt be very wise to jump out where he originally stopped. Good idea to keep driving away from further collision anyway.

They were all travelling way too fast though

Ha the Puntos are great in the snow, I got around not a bother in mine last year as well just with all weathers on. Same thing people thick everywhere as I tipped along by them no problem!

There should be a "Snow didn't stop my Punto" thread :pac:

Too many people think they can drive on snow when in reality, they haven't a clue. The chap in the Evo 8 must have thought he was invincible with AWD

He got away with that by the skin of his teeth. Suppose he's lucky he had 4WD, but it looked like he was driving too fast for the conditions

"I don't understand why people are stopped in these conditions, they are just asking to be rear ended".

So he duly stops, takes out the camera and videos the exterior of the car.

Jesus he caught that well though it was half luck, cant get a good feel for it on video but it looks like he was going a bit fast tbh.

Tell me about it i got waved down by some guy i thought he needed help, he said "slow down its snowing" i was going well below the posted speed and perfect for the conditions plus i was in the Junior 4wd and snow tyres the key is preperation, i also had a guard try to tell me a hill was closed because " not everyone can get up it" (people driving too slow and too close ) agin i was in the junior snow prepped had to explain this to him he eventually let me go but said it was on "your head" i went straight up straight down not even a slip  to make matters worse the "diversion" they were sending people was littered with abandoned cars in ditches the next day, they were crazy sending alot of people down windy narrow country roads.

Yes, because in the interest of safety he should have added one more car to the mass of nearly invisible cars littering the road in the heavy fog and snow storm, gotten out of the safe metal box and run around on snow/ice without knowing when traffic (that can't see him) might appear and be out of control of their vehicle..

By the looks of the way it's edited, he drove on a good bit before getting out and checking, there's no visible storm, and was pulled in to the side of the road and visibility looks greatly improved. And I'm guessing the reason he got out and checked is because he knew cars don't usually drive up the side of a bank, so he might have damaged something (ie. sump) and driving any further could damage the car

Just to warn people, a lot of in car DVR's (i.e. Cameras) have "fish eye" lens. So they give a much greater perception of speed than you would think. I think he handled the car very well for the incident involved. Noting how not of the other drivers had hazards etc on.

By the way 20 seconds in, interesting beep ;)

Seems the car to his right noticed the pileup later, only the second time watching did I see it impact the other car can send it flying from a standstill into the side of the road, ouch.

What's the beep - radar detector or something?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 499 ✭✭heate

From why I can see the conditions were awful but the storm may have come on quickly the guy in the Flex seemed to have been travelling a lot faster than the Evo.
The guy in the Evo noticed the pileup and went straight for the median and managed to avoid all the obstacles and a large truck. Fair play really good reactions

Its hard to believe not one of them thought of turning on their hazards and aswell as that, it looks like very few of them had their lights on which wouldn't help!

Nothing but pure luck got that evo through that pile up!

Has going way too fast , by the time he seen cars in front come out of the fog there was no way any car would of slowed up in time on that surface.. doesn't matter what kind of snow tires you have fitted or 4wd system was fitted to the car..

he pressed the brake pedal as hard as he could as the car swerved all over the road at first press of the pedal. the ABS allowed him to steer to the side avoiding collision. there was nothing controlled or skill full about that, it was just blind luck that there was a space for his car to slide through..

if everyone drove at a speed that allowed them to stop within the view able distance then there would be no accidents like that in the snow.

Blind Luck. Nothing skillful about what he did. Wise to get out of there mind you.

Must have busted his windscreen wipers during that too.

Agree 100% - it he was where the ford flex was he would have ended up in the back of those other cars be it sideways or head on!

Don't want to think what happened when that artic came through!
