I had unprotected sex 4 years ago.

I never had any bad symptoms or anything went wrong.

Is it still possible that I may have an STD?

Its unlikely but not impossible. If this is worrying you, you should get yourself checked.

If you are in Dublin James St do a free STI testing clinic most days :)

Bottom of the page :) Hope this is of some help ...

Yes it is possible, it could be that you did catch something but are asymptomatic.
Only way to be sure is to go and get tested.

As others have said, it's unlikely, but possible. Get yourself checked if you are worried but be aware not everything can be tested for, eg genital warts

It happened 4 years ago and it seems its still on your mind.

Give yourself some peace and go get checked.

The names of various clinics are widely available and the process of getting checked is straight forward and nothing to be afraid of.

I am sure your tests (for anything serious) will come back negative. It is actually quite difficult to catch any of the life threatening diseases from heterosexual sex.

I recently got tested and it was nice seeing the negative result. I will admit it was a bit stressful but it is worth it for peace of mind.

    Hi OP,

Of course it is possible so if it would put your mind at ease get checked. Im more interested to know what made you worry about it four years later? Are you under stress at the moment?

It is actually quite difficult to catch any of the life threatening diseases from heterosexual sex.

I don't see any medical evidence to support this theory.

Many STD's can ultimately by life-threatening, directly or indirectly (infertility). Quite a few diseases can have no symptoms.

It's a simple step to get checked at an STI clinic, Op. No need for embarrassment. Get it done and have peace of mind...... it's worth the little inconvenience.

This is not a good place to get medical advice Op, in fact it's a terrible place for that because we are not qualified and we are not permitted to offer medical advice.

Don't seek comfort here, .... get yourself checked.

    Be at peace,

    Z

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV#Transmission

    Example:

Insertive (male) penile-vaginal intercourse; Estimated infections per 10,000 exposures to an infected source: 5

The data shown represents transmission without the use of condoms.

but what counts as an exposure? You could be talking about 1 exposure, or several, if you're talking about ... movement. :o

    They are talking about sex.

Obviously the risk is increased or decreased depending on factors such as having sex during her period, having brutally rough sex, etc.

But the point I was making was that in general penis-vaginal sex is not very efficient way to transmit a deadly disease, so if you're worried, just get tested and be confident you will probably get a happy result. :)

There's plenty of non-life threatening diseases that are pretty nasty to to be worried about.

To the OP - you should get checked just so you don't have to worry with a new partner.

4 years ago, I had unprotected sex with a former girlfriend. She had been tested before we started to sleep with one another and was clear then.

If we were both clear at the time, does this greatly reduce the risk?

    OP,

There is really no point in going round in circles debating the possible odds for or against.

If you are concerned - make an appointment with your GP/local STI clinic and get yourself tested.

    All the best.
