Samsung Galaxy Ace or Samsung Galaxy Y?

Am due an upgrade next month, and have narrowed it down to these two phones.

Ace is a far better phone but not worth the money.

Get yourself a Galaxy Mini - you get a lot of phone for it's entry level price.

You don't get a lot of screen for it though.

    Currently have the Nokia 5230

Are you happy with the screen size of the 5230? The Ace has a 3.5" screen (same as the iPhone) while the Y has a 3.0". The res of the of the Ace (320 x 480) is also better then the Y's (320 x 240) which you think won't be a problem, but you face loads of app compatibility issues using the 320 x 240 screen. When I had my Wildfire which has a 320 x 240 screen I couldn't play any games on it. If you're tight on cash and looking for the cheapest phone, get the Y. If not, the Ace wins in most (if not all) categories.

I don't play games on my phone. I basically have it to make/take calls, surf the web(which I do too much of), and, most importantly, I have one for safety as I am a wheelchair user. I bought my first phone when I started driving.

Screen on the 5230 is a little small.

..............also if i can get a phone for free(upgrade) with O2 or with any of the networks that would be cool

If you mean O2 Bill Pay upgrade. I think the Galaxy S Plus is still free on a silver upgrade in Carphone Warehouse. Plenty of real estate and power to keep ya going.

Think the Sea Ray is free too.

Sorry meant Xperia Ray. Keep getting mixed up between Nokia Sea Ray and Xperia Ray :)

    http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_ray-3972.php

Xperia Ray is quite a compact handset though. It has even a smaller 3.3" screen but instead of that you get a 297 ppi pixel density which makes the grahpic detail to look very high for a wvga.

Other than that it performs well and has a decent enough camera.

Galaxy S Plus is just a refresh of the original with better processor.

Galaxy Y is a nice hardware step up from the Mini\Europa, but the screen is very dull and grainy. Try before you buy, get a lend of one, if you can.

Galaxy Ace is getting on a bit, but the screen is far better. I don't undertsand the price the Samsung Ace still commands in retail channels though, it is quite high, still.

    Nice looking phone that.

I'm getting more and more confused purely by the amount of different phones out there!!

you will be very frustrated with a small screen or low resolution.
dont waste an upgrade on one as you will only want to move up in a few months. buy a second hand or prepay one that you can sell on for the same price if you go for an entry level one.
especially when it comes to web browsing, its a much better experience on a bigger screen.
plus 3/4 of the screen is not hidden behind the keyboard any time you are typing

Am looking for a smaller/slimmer phone for convenience purposes as I outlined in my OP. And I moved away from prepay cos I was spending waaaaaaaaaaaay too much on credit.

If your looking for a small well peforming phone then xperia ray is probably the best choice for you. Go into a phone shop and play around with a live model or a dummy. All sony ericsson xperia phones have the same ui (except for mini and x8). Its just a small compact phone

It's got to be slim too, and not bulky.

nonono! :) im not saying go back to prepay, just that you could pick one up without a contract and use your current sim with it. you will still be eligible for your upgrade that way.

you say you want a small screen phone thats good for browsing, imo the 2 are not compatible. what i think could happen, as it happened to me and a few of my friends, is that you buy a smaller screen android, think its great for a while, browse more than ever and become frustrated with its limitations and want a bigger screen to get more out of it.

basically, an upgrade is more valuable, when you buy a better spec phone as you get an increasingly large discount. my advice is dont waste it on a low spec phone thats cheap anyway.
worst case scenario, get a galaxy s2, which also seems to be free on 02 billpay, sell it for 350-400 eu and buy whichever phone you want ;)

It's got to be slim too, and not bulky.

Use the GSMArena 'Phone Finder' and select Android as OS.

You can choose maximum height, width, thickness , display size etc and then you'll just have a handful to choose from and maybe less when budget is taken into account.

Myself: I wouldn't touch a phone that is longer than 115mm or 14mm thick - it's just a deal breaker for me as hate the feel of either a long phone in my hand or a thick phone in my pocket.

I recommended the Galaxy Mini as right now - there simply is no other Android on offer that could touch it terms of features at a price of €79.

If money is not an option however, get yourself a HTC Salsa - best Android I've ever used (wasn't mine unfortunately).

I picked up a HTC Explorer on Wednesday, Only €129.99 Pre-pay in O2 stores. Very impressed with it so far! I'd recommend one.

wink becuase its a cheeky way of doing things, but its what a lot of people do. its not illegal, its just the network dont sell you a phone at a huge discount so you can stick it on ebay.

my recommendation, is that if you can get a free SGS2, you should seriously consider it. if its too large (its extremely light) then i wouldn recommend not to go much below a screen size of 3.7 inches as android becomes unwieldy at lower resolutions and screen sizes.

I find the SGS2 too big. My brother has one. Didn't like the size of it - in that it is too wide to fit into my pocket comfortably.

I agree - can't understand how people can find phones of that size (and above) comfortable to use (when out and about at least).

I just find them so cumbersome.

For me the perfect size for a phone is around 110mm by 60mm.

Had an Xperia X1 for awhile and I just felt like a stockbroker from the 80's when I whipped it out on the Luas :p

LOL............I'm looking at 3 phones for my next upgrade.

    The Galaxy Mini
    The Galaxy Ace
    Sony Ericsson Xperia.

My younger bro is f***ing obsessed with me getting an Iphone. I simply don't want one - and it would be bloody huge too.

I know someone who had the ace and lost it so bought the mini to replace it and absolutly hates it compared to the ace.

Screen size, resolution and the slower processor make a massive difference to the overall user experience.

If I had a free upgrade the last phone i would get would be the mini. If size is the issue then the sony xperia mini would be a big step up specs wise compared to the samsung galaxy mini. The ace is also alot better but not sure if you want that big of a screen(same size as the iphones)

You can't compare the two phones. The Ace is three times the price for a start. The only reason the Mini is mentioned is that it is being compared to the Galaxy Y. Of course the Ace is a better phone but for €79 you won't get a better Android right now.

The bargain phone at the minute is the Xperia Mini at €129 on O2 - great value.

My advice would be to test out the size in the shop and just pick whatever phone you feel suits you best.

Yes i agree, but price doesn't come into it for the op because its a billpay upgrade. So they should try and get the best phone they can that suits there needs(in this case small size)

And yes the Xperia Mini is great value on payg at the moment, really good phone for the price.
