Passing by compensation

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me how passing by compensation works?

Do the modules have to be from the same subject or just the same department?

For example if I got 38% in Accounting and somewhere in the 70's in both of the economics modules could I pass by compensation because they are both from the Dept of Economics, Finance and Accounting. Or can you just not pass by compensation because there is only one module in accounting?

    Thanks

Hmm, I'm actually not sure about that. I imagine that it would have to be from the same subject, but because they're ran by the same dept it could be different. I'd send an email to your course co-ordinator to find out for sure.

Also, I'm pretty sure if you get 38% in an exam, you get a pass due to averages or something.

    That time of year again!

    1. General Principles
Your overall grade must be 40% or greater to pass the year, as long as you got at least 25% in all modules.

For example, if you get 70% in 5 modules, and 25% in the 6th, you would still pass the year even though you failed a module because your average was greater than 40%.

    2. Some cautions
This is safe most of the time. However, you should check with your department, as departments have some level of autonomy in this area and it's up to them whether you can pass by compensation:

    a) Between exam periods - as in, you might not be able to pass an exam you fail in August with results from Christmas and Summer because they're different exam periods

    b) Sometimes it's not possible to compensate between subjects, as opposed to modules, for students doing Double Honours Arts. For example, you get 100% in all your Music modules, but fail a French module - that module might only be compensatable from marks within French modules, and they wouldn't count the marks from Music. (Music and French are just examples off the top of my head, I don't know where these particular departments stand on pass by compensation)

    c) In some courses there are core modules that cannot be passed by compensation. These should be on the department's website and / or in the departmental handbook. Usually the department secretary will know what these are, you can just call them.

    Hope that helps!

to add to Banquo's comment, psychology exams cant be passed by compensation, ever. Only rarely do they make exceptions for within module compensation, for example if your essay was good and your exam was bad. Just in case anyone was wondering, which I'm sure they weren't, as the psychology department fairly drill it into people!
