First time overclocking, help needed!

Hey guys, so I've decided to try overclocking my new rig, it's an Asrock z68 extreme 4 gen 3, i5 2500k, 8gig corsair vengeance, gigabyte radion hd 6950 and a noctua d14 cooler. I already upped it to 4.0GHz and the CPU temp after a half hour was 52C

Basically I want to get the most out of the rig so anything I can tweak I will' I'll also be using this setup a lot so long term stability is a must. I,ve already done some research on it but I'm not 100% confident so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try 45 multiplier and vcore of 1.35.

What are you using to stress test, by the way?

V core is CPU voltage I take it? I have prime 95 but i really have no idea how to use it? What test should I run?

vCore is CPU voltage, yes. If you're running Prime95, you should be using the Small FFTs test, and double-check that there's four threads (one for each core) running.

You'll want to watch your temps with something like HWMonitor, anything around 75° and you should stop the test. Don't be afraid of a blue screen or two either; it just means you need to up the voltage another notch.

Try 45/1.35, and see how you get on with that. Those are ballpark figures for a decent overclock, so we can try and nail things down from there once you get it stable.

Oh, and I'd run Prime of a minimum of half an hour here. You might also want to look into Intel Burn Test. It's usually better for the quick check stuff like this (you'd then use P95 for 24 hours to check long-term stability). If you are going to try IBT, you want it on maximum, for ten passes. Anything over 80° and you stop.

    Hope that helps.

Edit: This is a post I made a while back, might be of use.

Ok so I upped it to 4.6GHz and ran intel burn on max for ten passes, got a high temp of 77c and I have prime 95 working away as I write this with no problems so far! Only thing that I couldn't seem to do was adjust the vcore manually, when I set it to 1.35 and went to boot it wouldn't boot from the hdd, I put vcore temp to auto and it went to 1.329v so I'm assuming that's alright?

Once these tests finish I'm gonna push it to 4.8 and see how I get on? Any tips on oc'ing the graphics card?

I can't see why it wouldn't boot with you manually setting voltage, might want to look into that. Usually overclocks are more stable if you can't stay away from auto settings.

Try for 4.8 if you want, but I wouldn't adjust the voltage any more than that. I gave 80° as a guideline - you're fairly close to that as-is.

As for your GPU, Afterburner, 15-20MHz, increments, play games / leave Heaven (or something similar on loop) watch for performance drops and/or artifacts, and keep your temperatures in check. The post I linked to earlier also has a bit on GPUs.
