    Hi folks,

I have a shiney new bike with an shimano nexus IGH. Just wondering if there is anything in particular i should take in to account or any precautions i should take when cleaning the chain? or is it just degrease and lube as normal?

Would getting a quick link on the chain be a good idea and just popping it off every week or so for a proper clean?

Any other tips for maintenance on them is appreciated too.

    Thanks

I would have thought that if anything chains on IGH would need less maintenance because they are not being constantly shifted up and down cassettes and chainrings.

I have a Stumney Archer IGH and I just clean and lube it like any other chain. I haven't taken it off yet and it seems to be running fine.

I don't bother cleaning, just add some lube when it starts to get noisy (maybe once every 1000km).

    This is not a recommendation.

    Cool thanks folks.

Ill certainly be degreasing it as it picks up a lot of debris on my commute.

Don't use citrus degreaser (or any degreaser?) with the chain still on the bike! I did, on a Nexus 8-equipped bike, and ultimately needed to replace the innards of the hub after some degreaser worked its way inside the casing.

My subsequent routine was a simple wipe off and re-lube, with no cleaner at all.

My current daily bike has a 3-speed Nexus with the chain inside a chain case, so I've lubed it twice in 15 months and never given it more than a wipe to clean it.

I have not had any issues with degreasing with citrus degreaser. Just don't aim at the IGH with your spray. I must have degreased it 5 times now in 2 years (they dont need a lot of maintenance)

A quicklink is of no use (I think) unless you have a tensioner that you can flip back. I do have a quicklink, but I can't get the chain off without moving the rear wheel.
