Maintaining / protecting a roof rack

Is it worth maintaining a roof rack? It's a Renault OEM fitted to a van and there are surface rust spots where ladders etc have been slid on/off. Will it take a long time for the metal to corrode to the point of needing to be replaced? Even if it was touched up with paint, I can't see a how it coulod be prevented from…
