Handicaps for Golf Society.

Some advice please. I play in a society where some members have official GUI H/Caps whilst others are not affiliated to any club and play solely for the day out and the craic.

A problem arose some time back when the same people continually won the prizes whilst the 'fair weather players', were always the back markers. In an attempt to address this problem and provide some alternative winners, we started all GUI members off with their official H/Caps at the start of the season, and those w/o, we counted their 3 cards from the previous season and agreed a H/C ranging from 18-26.

We also agreed that those who won a prize in the Society would be cut 1 shot, be it the GUI or other, and those that came second or third would be cut the .3s etc.

Although not a perfect solution it did provide some alternatives in the winners enclosures, but recently some disagreements have begun to surface and some people are now getting upset at how the H/Cs are being calculated.

In an attempt to resolve this issue could I ask for some alternative ways of addressing this problem, as I am sure it is not confined to us alone.
    Thanks.

Some people should be told to shut up!

It's a very equitable system you have in place.

Very fair way ye're doing it. The work society i'm involved in works the same way. Bet its the lads that were always winning prizes complaining.

What about the lads only playing in fourballs and then going on to play in the captain's prize with a nice handicap to 'play around with'!! The complaints come from the players who faithfully play in the singles, justifiably, but no solution has been brought into the rules of playing in club majors.

If anyone wins an outing then deduct 3 points from their stableford scores for their next 4 outings; 2 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd or whatever. On top of this, adjust their handicap in line with what you do.

People always moan about handicaps but if you penalise people that win for a while and then let others have a chance then it's fair for everybody.

I think it's important to penalise people quickly and quite severely.

3 points comes straight off their score whereas a handicap cut may have less of an effect.
