iMac Fan Running Flat Out....

I turned on my iMac this evening (about an hour ago). Checked a few mails and surfed Boards & FB for a while and noticed that the fan is running. I've never heard the fan run before in the 18 months I've had it.

Any reason why it's running. It's not like I'm asking the iMac to do any 'real' work!

EDIT: The air from the vent is cold.

EDIT2: Shut the iMac down and fan is now off. Has anyone any ideas as to why the fan was on?

Could have been a number of things, a good way to find out is launch Activity Monitor, and see if any processes are using a big chunk of cpu time. Make sure to show "all processes" in the top right. Depending on the process you can sometimes kill it and bring your cpu back to normal.
