Leaving TV and Satellite equipment on standby?

Was in a friends house the other day who is an electrician. He went to switch on his telly etc and I noticed he had to switch a socket on first. I asked him did he not leave his stuff on standby and he said he never ever leaves anything switched on at night for safety reasons. Got me thinking.

My sky boxes, dvd recorder etc are always on standby. Thinking of doing the same as him from now on. Just wondering if anyone has opinions on this= one query being -does it make any difference to the wear of your products if they were going to be effectively rebooted every day?

    thanks

It will save you money and the enviroment, however sky boxes receive software updates from Sky during the nite and anytime features so if you unplug your box then you could miss important updates but you can do these manually.

Having been through a fire in a flat caused by an electrical fault, I always unplug or switch off sockets to everything except my fridge/freezer at night. Especially my "entertainment" set-up due to the number of cables and extensions.

I have something similar to this and its great

The TV is the chief unit and once I turn the TV off the socket will switch off the peripherals automatically after the chief appliance is turned off
You can use something in the always on mode too like a router for example

I have all my entertainment stuff,tv,Sky,PS3 etc. running through a surge protector.
Never use a double adaptor, they have a habit of catching fire.

The only problem with plugging out a Sky+ box is that it can't record with no power so leave it plugged in,even if you plug the tv etc. out.Plus Sky send updates to the box during the night.

Had a guy ring me before complaining that he set his Sky+ to record a tv show but it didn't record. After a few questions I found out he plugged out the box before he went to bed.
