Water-pump problems

    We've just moved into an appartment and noticed the hot water pressure was very low.

    I noticed that the breaker marked "pump" was off at the board and upon knocking it on I realized why - the pump kicks in every minute or so for about 5 seconds, this happens all day long.

    My first thought was to check for minor leaks around the place but everything seems sound and now I'm at a loss as to what the problem might be.

    There pump has a egg shaped metal can on the top with an air valve similar to the valve on a car wheel, must this be topped up with air, or must I bleed this valve?

    What other options do I have to try and fault find before I call a plumber?

    Thanks ;}

    Pressure vessel (that's the thing with the air valve on it) might have lost charge. Not sure if a bicycle pump will do the trick - it might if it will fit the valve.

    ...thanks for the info, I see those little black sensors detect water movement and turn on the pump - what role does this vessel play and could it effect the system if indeed it has lost charge?

    Have you checked your toilet to see if the internal overflow has kicked in maybe? This might be setting off the pump also...

    it stops the rapid recycling which you refer to. There is a rubber membrane inside the chamber and the air pressure is set when pump is powered is off and not pressurised, open a tap.

    You should be able to find the right pressure if you google the exact make/ model. I think its 1.5 bar or 22 psi so u need a tyre gauge

    The rapid cycling could also be due to a leak some where, dripping tap, cistern etc
