Buying a new laptop

    Hi,
My Sony Vaio laptop has started to act up, I think its going to die soon so I need to get a new laptop.

I will be using it for college, downloading and watching HD movies, email, facebook etc

I was looking to spend about €700, I want something with a decent battery and looks good, thats probably the most important, I don't want an ugly laptop. I was going to buy another vaio but everyone I had has broken within the first 12-18 months over the past 5 years so I want to get something different.

I was looking at the HP DM4 http://www.argos.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10152&catalogId=13352&langId=111&searchTerms=dm4&authToken=

It seems like a decent laptop, does anyone have any comments on it or other recommendations.

    Thanks

Have a look at Ultrabooks, when the ivy bridge is released in March/April they should go down in price.

They are nice, but if I was going to spend anymore I would spend the extra nad get a mac and I can't wait until March for a new one.

I too was looking to buy a new laptop (definitely not a mac!) And thought it'd be better posting here rather than making a new thread labelled the same. My Sony Vaio died a few months back after 4 long years service and was looking at getting something new.

Ive had my eyes of the MSI GT/GX 680, 683 or 780 line... I was wondering what advice anyone would have on these bits of hardware, or if ye had any experience of them?
The budget is in about €1,500 range, can go a bit over if needed. And the specs I'm lookin at are these:
    • Blu Ray Player, & full hd screen,
    • At least 1xUSB 3.0
    • A HDMI connection
    • Preferably i7 processor
    • Not too fussy about the size of the HDD
    • 6 GB RAM (the more the merrier)
As I'm not a computer expert any kind of feedback would be helpful!

I followed this Thread just to see if anyone would reply to someone whose main requirement was a good looking laptop.

You should have started a new Thread. What size screen do you want?

This fits the bill but I dont like the weight of it myself or the joined up keyboard with the numpad.

You'd have some money left to throw in a decent SSD too.

Id buy it myself apart but the keyboard and weight put me off.

That's actually quite a cool laptop! comes with subwoofer and all! To be honest I'm not too bothered about the whole weight issue, as I wont be lugging it around the whole time.
And to answer the am I going to be gaming, I'm not a huge gamer, but it'd be nice to know that if I were to that I could, more so for future proofing myself. But mostly It'll be for photography and video editing. And occasionally CAD, which tends to leave all the computers I use horrendously slow! So multimedia/gaming laptops was the route I was looking at.

that was my old one, and looking back on it, it didnt seem to fair out too badly to some recent devices... It was better than my old flatmates Dell laptop, he had all the icons on his laptop changed to the Alienware one, includint the cursor and his background:p
