No but the missus' father and I have looked at cars there a few times when passing, while the cars have all looked good they are bloody expensive.

I've bought thirteen cars from him since 1995. It's hard to get him to move on price but he has almost always treated me very well in that department (gave me a fantastic deal on my present Accord). He does provide great after sales service in my experience.

I bought a few Hondas from him over the years. Always found him fine to deal with. Any used ones I bought were in great condition, IIRC he did tend to be towards the upper limit price wise.

I haven't bought anything from him in recent years but I happened to meet him on the street in Thurles a few weeks ago, he shook hands and had a chat which I thought was very decent.

There was a English salesman in there who has effectively turned me off ever going back again.

His sticker prices on the likes of carzone are nearly in dreamer territory which would put me off even trying to haggle with him.

    Colin Holliday ;)

I went in there when looking for my first car. He had a 1998 Mazda 323 saloon, almost 100,000 miles on it and the price on it was something like €11,000.

Said salesman came out to me, showed me around the car etc. I asked him if he could do anything on the price. He left me waiting in the forecourt for 20 minutes, came out and said "I can take €200 off it". :pac:

He's known all over town for being very expensive. With that said though, he's not dodgy at all. Maybe that's the reason his cars are expensive, due to the fact that they're in good condition etc?

Thanks Guys Just wanted to know what others thought, bought four cars off him and just failed to deal with him on the last occasion. He let me go for €200 and I know that I was giving him over the odds for a petrol accord which had been on the forecourt for nearly a year. He doesn't value loyalty much and as for after sales in my experience don't return to him with a technical problem he'll never solve it and will do all in his power to put the blame on YOU! Disappointing.

Nice to bit of info to know, thanks. By any chance it wasn't that accord type s that seemed to be there forever was it?

Yes it was actually a 2007 plate.

I've bought a few cars off him, including the car I have at the moment.
He's definitely expensive, but then the car I have is pure quality - I'm delighted with it, so that's worth something.

To be honest, even though I know I could buy the equivalent elsewhere for cheaper, I'll definitely go back to him again, as I'm looking for quality and reliability. Sure, if it's only price that concerns you, you should buy private.

    Is your first name Denis?

If the same car is thousands cheaper elsewhere why pay extra?

You don't know why people pay extra to buy from a garage than private?
Several reasons, the main one being the warranty.
If you know the garage has a good reputation then you know the chances of the car letting you down is diminished considerably.
And if it does break down, at least you can bring it back and get it fixed without the extra cost.

Bringing it back and getting it fixed has nothing to do with the warranty (or lack of an explicit warranty). The Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 takes care of the consumer if the car fails to meet the standards of merchantability, fitness for purpose and being as described.

There is nothing wrong about buying private. Do your homework first before buying private and have a mechanic inspect the car. You can always put money aside from the savings of buying private towards any unexpected problems down the road.

Still doesn't change that the sticker prices at this garage are higher than average compared to similar cars in other garages. These days most people will vote with their feet and shop around.
