Canon Flash not popping up

    My Canon 500d flash won't pop up any more.

    When I try use it I can hear it try to click up and then a message comes up (Error 5) telling me to turn off and on the camera again.

    I know this is my fault, I carry it everywhere and sometimes without a case so it's probably got a bash (yes I know, bad scamp).

    Just wondering does anyone know how much off-hand it will cost to get it fixed.

    I'm not going to get it fixed until summer when I'm finished college because I never really use the flash anyway and need the camera for the time being.

    Would it be cheaper to buy an external flash instead?

    there is a small micro-switch in the flash hotshoe mount that sometimes gets stuck when you take a flash or hotshoe accessory off your camera (for me it's my double bubble) causing the camera to think there is an obstruction

    The micro-switch sits under the left side metal "skid" like piece of metal (viewing from the rear).

    if the switch is stuck because the "skid" hasn't raised up enough then use a small flathead jewellers screwdriver to gently prod it up.
    if the micro-switch plunger has slipped down below the level of the camera body you'll need to either disassemble the hotshoe mount to free the micro-switch plunger and realign it or get Canon to do this for you.

    Just in case anyone is doing a search for the same thing this is exactly what I followed.
    I had this problem with a Rebel XT. Talked with Canon tech to told me to push the button and after the error appeared try applying light pressure to the side of the flash and see if it would pop up. I had to put pressure on the left side of the flash (as if you were holding the camera to take a picture). After I got the flash to pop up using this method I made it a point to pop it up periodically and I've never had a problem since.
