Yeah I know, there are 20 million threads on this, but my question is how close do you have to be to the van before it calculates your speed? I was goin bout 120 in 100 zone, spotted van a little late but got braked about 100yards in front of it..Am I caught?

Interested in knowing this too .... in my case I was on the M11 outside London doing the speed limit (or thereabouts). This gatso van was on a overpass but it had a clear view along the motorway for at least 2km, it could see the cars coming towards them LONG before those cars could see it.

just to jump on this the gatso van in monaghan parks around 200m from a speed change 100 to 60kmph, i thought they had to be at least 400m or something from a speed change

A week to the day for me.

And your situation sounds very like mine. Spotted the van braked, but (in my case anyway) was of no use. Keep you fingers crossed but I reckon it's very likely you were done. **** happens...

but in short the radar beam transmits at approx 22˚ from teh back window of the van.
when you enter that beam your speed is obtained and a pic taken if need be.

i'll let you work out the math as to how far back it can obtain your speed, as the further into the hard shoulder the van is, the further away it will get speed readings

this is a poor example, but you should get the idea

Would i be caught about 300m-200m from the gatso van? I had slowed to speed within that distance

Thats good info, does anyone know what the tollerance is with these Gatso vans? Is it a few km/ph or zero tollerance?
They love hiding here in New Ross just as you exit town, always with the Gatso van on the 50km/ph zone.Very easy to get caught..

All the gatso vans were decommissioned.

As above, how long is a piece of string. You can accept as gospel what you'll read here and ............. you're only torturing yourself.

OP put a fiver a week away for two months, it'll either be spent paying a fine or on a good(ish) night out.

Very unlikely. The Safety van can see you at that distance for speed, but it cannot photograph your number plate until you are within 10m of the van, and you are photographed only if you are over limit . So if you brake 200m away ,you should be OK. No doubt technology will overcome those limitations in time, but the country is f**ked, so it may not be any time soon. The gatso vans operated by AGS, on the other hand can record your speed ,etc., at up to 400m.

fúck..got nabbed again in Jan and now on the way to 6 points...
Think I might also have got nabbed again the following week as I was overtaking some príck in a van doing 60kph in a 100kph zone...sat nav was telling me 99/100 so hopefully I dodged that one :)
otherwise it's 8 points and driving like granddad for the next 18 months till I lose 4 of them..

Still no sign of any points from that incident. I am so embarassed to say I did get caught since, in fairness it was 55 in a 50 zone, but I have no excuse. I have already recieved notification of this second time, so I take it I wont receive anything from the first. So now I have 4 points, and am so embarrassed and annoyed at myself!!

Can anyone explain what the Flash at 18 seconds into the video below is about? Did the driver get penalty points? I've heard speed vans flash and was wondering if this is the flash that offending motorist would see from the speed vans.

That little light seems to go off at every car that passes, no matter what speed you're doing

From looking at few videos, I think its the reflector in the IR flash. There is a private video of one actually flashing and its VERY visible. Its Christmas for about 1 second. The video above isn't a flash. Should probably note, its NOT visible to a human. Its only visible to a camera.

Just to chime in on the distance, it depends on road conditions and time of day. At night its far, far closer than 100m. Remember even the best NV rifle scopes have trouble cracking that sort of distance. The cameras in GoSafe are very clever to allow for headlights etc (I'll see can I pull up the video) but it still takes a moment for them to adjust and snap.

Day time as pa990 said, I'd call it at about 100m or under. There would be no reason to snap above that range.

Ironclaw, what is the purpose of the light that flashes to all motorist those under and those exceeding the speed limit as per the video above?

    Like I said:
I think its the reflector in the IR flash.

Its your own headlights shining back at you.

Or possibly it snaps every motorist going by. If your over, it saves you, if not your rejected. Would probably make sense to do that as similar technology is used on tax vans in the UK (Before anyone asks, GoSafe don't do tax checks) A pre-flash is also a possibility as it could be used to calibrate if a full flash is required.

As I said above, any video I've seen at night with a flash, its very very obvious. If you concerned about this type of thing, buy a DVR and check it when you get home. Will tell you straight away.

You sure about that? A friend of mine got a 140e fine yesterday for speeding and no tax. Caught by a GoSafe van.

Do the vans check speeds for cars coming from both directions or only the side they are on?

Photo and evidence is sent to Thurles which process it. Maybe if its flagged for no tax there it gets added on. Could have been a Garda van, 99% of people can't tell the difference. GoSafe don't do any fine processing, they just collect the photos.

    Both. Read the mega thread.

Don't cut yourself up Catxscotch "it could happen to a bishop".... as they say!!... unless you drive below the lowest speed limit at all times (& cause havoc to other road users) all of us could very likely be caught out... a lot of these speed cameras are placed on poorly signposted roads & unless your local & road known to you all too easy to be done!!
