Has anyone ever come across a garage who refused to give a price of a service without knowing the reg of the car?

A toyota garage won't give me fuel oil and air filters for cars unless I give them the reg. ( I sometimes pick up parts for my mechanic if he requires them for other cars). They need the reg to be able to give me the correct parts, as the year and model won't do. eg. My toyota auris has a different air filter than the one my neighbour has even though both are 08 D4D cars.

So maybe in your case, the garage needs the reg to get the correct pricing for the parts before they can give you a quote on the service.

Parts are more than likely not necessary since the car is just coming up to being a year old and only came onto the market last year.

I've a feeling the garage is just being a bit devious though as I had orignally planned to buy the car from them but they messed me around so I went else where. There would be a limited number of the car in Ireland.

    Thanks for your reply.

Did you tell them the exact car/engine type?

It depends on that car, many times a car/model will have changed mid year so if you said you have an 05 passat 1.6(for example) It could be the old model 1.6 8v or the new model 1.6fsi so service parts and requirements would be completely different.

Also, if its a dealer, they often can't access their parts computer accurately without a reg or chassis number.

    What car is it?

    Honda CR-Z

Yeh I told them the exact car and engine type.

    I edited my post above.

The car was a new car to the market and AFAIK it hasn't changed.

What service is the car telling you its due? The CR-Z's display the exact combination of service items when required as letters and numbers iirc.

The basic 'A' service is an oil and filter change.

Has a picture of a car pointing to a wrench.

Looked in the book and it said it was a general service.

Doesn't have any letters or numbers.

    I'll double check again now.

What is the issue. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

Check your manual, there may be a menu you have to access to tell you exactly what's due.

Checked the menu there. It's AB.

@mickdw My issue is that I've rang 3 garages and gotten quotes no problem but this garage refused to give me a quote without the reg (and said they'd ring me back and haven't as of yet). They wouldn't give me a reason either for wanting the reg.

I'm wondering, even if they do give a decent quote should I just walk away.

If they don't call you back and they won't tell you why they need the reg, then surely that's clue enough about their customer service?

The AB service is an oil and filter and full vehicle inspection.

€65 euro in our place and should be similar in any decent independent garage.

If they don't ring back well keep away. Again, I would be happy that they ask for reg. Its not the most common car and so at least they would be sure to quote you correctly having had the reg. Much better for you that they quote accurately instead of trying to add on when the work is done or quoting too high to cover all eventualities. Perhaps they are buying service parts from Honda. In that case, they would need the reg I'm sure.

My garage always asks for my regards despite knowing me and the car. It's to make sure they give an accurate price and no doubt a basis of the quote if you decide to take it up in a week or two.
