Castle Street 1968

    Hello everyone.

My mother, who sadly died over 30 years ago, was brought up on Castle Street. I was born and live in England and visited Waterford only once in 1968 when I was 8. I have a couple of photos of Castle Street from that time and I'm trying to determine where my mother's old house was.

She lived at number 20 (it was on the left-hand side as you're facing the French Tower) and I can see from Google Street View that all the houses on that side have been demolished and replaced.

I have a couple of photos from when I was there and comparing them to Street View, the only constants are the French Tower and (possibly) the houses on the right-hand side.

1968 view away from the French Tower

    French Tower in 1968

Can anyone tell me if the current houses on the right-hand side are the same as those in 1968? Also, if anyone has any photos of Castle Street before redevelopment I would be eternally grateful to see them. I've found a colour photo of unknown date that shows some of the houses bricked up prior to demolition.

If only I knew then that in 40+ years time I'd be researching this. I'd have undertaken a far more extensive photographic survey :p.

    Many thanks in advance.

Hey, a friend of mine lives in the newer houses that are roughly on the same spot as in the first photo (on the opposite side of the french tower) Afaik, his family is originally from that area so I will ask if he has any info and photo's and pass them on. I think the houses on the french tower side, the ones surrounded by railings are still there, that's about it though.

The houses on the right hand side on the way up csatle street are still the same , Galtee terrace and the other name escapes me, number twenty would have been near the top if memory serves me right, what was the Family name?

Thank you Kaden and Wellboy. Now I know the right-hand houses are the same, I should be able to roughly determine whereabouts my mother's old house was :).

Thank you for asking your friend for me Kaden. I really appreciate that. My mother's maiden name was Rogers (or possibly Rodgers. I've seen both spellings on documents). I think my grandmother's maiden name may have been Hardy. Unfortunately I know very little about my mother's family. I wish I'd thought to ask her about it in detail while she was alive :(.

    Fabulous Dave. Thank you :).

I'd be particularly interested in the right-hand houses towards the French Tower as they feature in the first of my 1968 photos. A long shot showing both terraces would be great too.

    Many thanks again.

I will get in contact with my mother and ask her. I think 19 or 21 was there address ( I could be wrong ) but will find out for you and give all the information as soon as I can. Her maiden was Walsh.

That's great Barry. Thank you :). Any information I can gather about who lived at number 20 (particularly around 1968) would be invaluable to me.

A general Castle Street query - Does anyone know when the houses were demolished?

Also click on http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,660536,612064,7,10 to see how the street plan looks today, then click Historic 25" in the box on the right to see the street plan for around 1900...there should be little or no difference between 1900 and 1968 in Castle Street.

The houses you're interested in were knocked in the mid to late 1980's.

Hi. Try looking up the 1901-1911 Irish census, you might get info about your mothers
    Family.

Just had a look at the 1911 census and this is the Hardy family living in no.20 back then:

Didn't have any luck with Rogers but there were some in Barrack Street which is only a stone's throw from Castle Street.

I'm nearly sure there were some old pictures of Castle Street in a supplement of the News & Star (local paper) last week - I'll check and see if I still have it and scan them in. If you think they're any good I'm sure they'd send you on better quality copies.

Here you go, taken from the News & Star dated December 27th; the photos were from 1985.

Intteresting maps Andrew - particularly the historic one. Thank you for the link. Such a shame the house numbers aren't annotated though.

Was it a sweet shop/newsagent? I have fond memories of going to that shop when I was there. There was a particular (pleasant) smell in the shop that always takes me back to Castle Street if I smell it :). I think it was a mixture of all the sweets.

Thank you Maggie and Cat. I had discovered the 1911 Census some while back but you reminding me has prompted me to revisit it. I *may* have identified my grandmother as Johanna Hardy (aged 8 in 1911). As my mother was born in 1920, she'd have to have been pregnant at about 17 but it's possible. I recall an 'Uncle Denis' from my time in Waterford, and there's a Denis Hardy on the 1911 Census. He was deaf and dumb. Maybe someone remembers that?
