Hopefully I wont be blasted out of it for this.
    Rooting n00b here.

I have scoured XDA-dev forums but can't find the answer to my specific question.
Thought I'd give here a go first.
    (will be asking there later)

I have a GT-i9100 purchased here in China, came with I9100ZCKG4 kernel,
    Build is Gingerbread.zckg4

I've rooted it with i9100XWKDD and am looking to flash another rom from a different region to circumvent some gimping that took place with the Chinese version (cant install most google apps)

This is the version I'm going to install, it's from Hong Kong:

    GT-I9100_TGY_I9100ZSKI3_I9100OZSKI3_I9100XXKI3

    Kernel_I9100ZSKI3

Now... am I right in assuming that a ROM that works for one i9100 should work for an i9100 in any region?

It's not an i9100-G or anything like that...just plain and simple GT-i9100.
The hardware should technically be identical from region to region right?

So no danger in flashing it with that offical HK ROM?

    Cheers.

I know on my HTC the hk rom available for it is only for hk phones. Don't know why to be honest as I'd imagine as long as it's GSM then it should work.

Make a backup before flashing the new rom.
If it goes tits up odin your old rom/install recovery and restore backup.

    Hmm, well that didn't work.

Failed spectacularly, giving me a red android logo and a software error when trying to reboot the phone.

Of course I had prepared everything needed for recovery so getting back to stock firmware was a matter of about a minute....but that was one stressful minute :o

Next I'm going to try it straight from CWM rather than Odin, is there any way I can change a .tar to a .zip for CWM use?

    Hey there,

A couple of solutions on this thread:

Not that anyone else on this forum is too likely to run into this specific issue, but maybe it'll draw in the google searches.
