Hi all, just wondering if there is a specific type of memory that i must use for the mac mini to upgrade, i know it must be ddr3 but is there any specific brand or anything i should go for? I was looking at this:
    http://komplett.ie/Komplett/product/ZKB_01COM/08_MEMINT/03_DDR3/productdetails/20091390/Corsair_Vengeance_8_GB_1600_MHz_PC3_12800/CML8GX3M2A1600C9B/default.aspx
    ...
That memory is the wrong spec - these SODIMMs are the correct spec -

... Would i also need to replace the stock memory that came with it as to keep all the memory the same? ...
There are only two memory slots. To get to 8GB you need 2X4GB SODIMMs so ypou must remove all the original memory.

... and is 8gb the max i can go for, it seems to say this on the apple website but was told this was untrue
    http://www.apple.com/ie/macmini/specs.html ...
The i7-based server MacMini may take more than 4GB SODIMMS but it seems yours won't.

... finally, is it easy enough to upgrade, i upgrade my home pc now and again without any issues but the mac mini seems really fragile, worried about breaking something ...
The Apple website you link to suggests that the MacMini is only configurable with extra memory prior to shipment by the AppleStore, meaning you probably need special tools techniques or training to upgrade it. This disclaimer usually means if you break the seals you void the warranty and forfeit your statutory protections.

It's pretty simple to replace the ram, and it was either on here I read it or the apple site where it says you can replace the ram without affecting the warranty.

    Steps are here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4432
I changed mine only about an hour ago, got the ram from crucial [follow link in next posts, i put in the american site]
43 euro roughly for 8gigs including postage

Crucial is where to go to get it. Use the EU site - www.crucial.com/eu and you can get free delivery also... 8gb kit for ~ €43 delivered

thanks for the replies, the crucial site is good value so will definitely go with them, i've heard its easy enough so i'll give it a go, just don't want to break anything

Apples specifies 1333MHz DDR3 SODIMMs (I can't see the ECC spec) - the Kingston kit in my initial post meets Apple's spec exactly, none of the others do. You can of course choose memory of a different spec and it may well work, but caveat emptor.

thanks, i actually found a compatibility checker on crucials site, just put in the model of the mac mini and it came up with the right memory, handy out and cheap enough too

I swapped out my late 2009 mac mini memory using crucial and their compatibility check. 8gb is the maximum according to the efi for that model. You need 2 putty knives to prise open the cover. If yours is the newer model it's even easier as there is a twist off cover for memory upgraded. Good luck. It makes a big difference in lion.

yeah i'm hoping it'll make a difference, mainly use it for photoshop and a little bit for handbrake, subler etc.
