Morning all. just looking for some advise (i have an nct tomorrow and i want to see should i postpone) .

right so - not sure if this is relevant to my issue but nevertheless - parked my car facing the wind last night (normally side on) i live on the side of a mountain and it gets regurlary down to negative figures - when i was driving in this morning battery light came on and then went off . when i turned on lights and such would reappear - heating / brakes and so on. grand i thought cheap halfords battery just need a new one -that or the battery just got too cold (is that possible ? ) .

was just about to bring to the garage to get checked when the battery light has now gone off and doesnt appear again despite usage (everything on - so it looks okay ) however now the engine light has appeared - there is no noise - nothing strage - car doesnt handle any differently - nada - im perplexed and the garage i was going to is closed so im stuck as to what to do.

im thinking of disconnecting battery and hoping ecu resets ,that there isnt an actual issue but with the nct tomorrow and im starting to panic - soooooooo anyone have any thoughts.

    alfa 156 1.6 tspark - 2001
    thanks in advance.

The battery light sounds like a belt or possibly a regulator problem.

Its impossible to say what the engine light could be without having the fault code read but if you have an an alternator/charging problem then various engine sensors could be recording voltage issues.

Disconnect the battery for 10 mins and hope for the best. The 156 is known for random engine management lights. Generally if mine comes on it'll go out after disconnecting the battery and a few starts. Be aware that it'll probably take a few goes to start it after reconnecting. Mine hasn't done it for two weeks.

strange one but turned it on and the light is off ,

telling you this car certainly makes the hearts race :) even when turned off it nearly causes a heartattack :D.

thanks lads , will monitor and once it gets through the nct will get it checked.

The fault will still be stored in the ECU even if the light is now off.

I wud go for the alternator. Had many alfas 146, 156 147 ... nice solid cars. Engines Perfect if u know how to mind it ;)) .

Alternator cud get water ingress, not much needed in this lovely weather. This cud cause little short and send wrong signal to ECU (no charging for x amount of time). Engine warmed up water disappear, light gone but fault in ECU still there.

Ps. Mind the oil and variatior.
