    Hey all,

Didn't know where to ask about this but seeing as it's tailored towards car maintenance etc I thought here was a good place.

    http://www.lidl.ie/cps/rde/xchg/lidl_ri_ie/hs.xsl/index_16786.htm

Anybody here had any experience with tools from lidl? I've read that they all confirm to German standards? Are German standards even worthy?

I'd like to pick this set up as a first set to allow me to service my car myself.

    Advice appreciated :)

I've never bought tools in Lidl but those boxes are normally fairly dear and it a nice box to keep all your tools in. Usually Lidl stuff is fairly good, so to get the box and those tools, not bad for €80.

You don't need many tools for DIY car servicing, i built up my collection of tools by buying as i needed. Since i was buying only 1 or 2 tools at a time i got descent stuff that will last without a massive single payout.
I know most people on here don't rate halfords stuff (it is normally dear) but i got a brilliant socket set in there in the sales for €20. It will last me a long time.

I think last time I looked they were of pretty reasonable quality, certainly not crap, that said I pointed out that these sets were only 99.95 + 9.95 postage for a lot bigger set.
1/4 and 1/2 inch drives are good but limited.
The set I linked too has 3/8 drive as well and thats the size I most commonly use when working on fasteners up to 15mm

Would be rude not to at that price, picked up a kit pretty similar over here recently, it's handy to have in the house for the odd bodge job :D
Any bits iv picked up from lidl, were well up to the job.

There is an emergency screwdriver there for the time you have ruined your arms and wrists wrestling with it.

    (Filth not intentional)

EDIT: Are Rothewald a good brand?

I bought a set of T-drivers a while back ,plenty good enough compared with other tools like Teng etc.

I've bought Aldi/Lidl stuff and it's been fine although I wouldn't buy stuff I use heavily.

Be careful with fixings and the like, they are crap, hose clips are useless and screws are plasticine

if your not gonna use them to much they are great for that price, i got a socket set from lidl a year or 2 ago and 2 of the sockets split over the nut. I now have a teng set which is better but i payed for the better quality

also the chests you get aren't great very flimmsy feeling. but altogether for 80 quid it's worth trying

    would this set http://www.louis.de/index.php?topic=artnr_gr&article_context=detail&grwgr=370&wgr=461&list_total=20&anzeige=0&page=0&artnr_gr=10003275&lang=en
as previously mentioned here be better?
What is the story with 3/8 1/2 1/4 sockets?
Would the one in lidl not fit all the metric sizes?

Thats the drive size, the square piece that the sockets slide onto comes in different sizes depending on the type of torque that is needed to tighten the fastener.
I personally find 3/8 the most versatile for general useage, 1/2" more for suspension and heavier duty fasteners.
1/4" I use on the motorcycle mainly.
