3DS Top Screen Flicker

Skimmed the first 5 pages and didn't find a thread relating to this, so move me on if there is one.

I've a red 3DS, about a month old. When i open it up from sleep mode the top screen usually flickers quite badly (not the transition from 2D to 3D, but a complete loss of image), can last for up to 30 seconds, console is still running as there's a perfect display on the bottom screen.

It wasn't bothering me that much until i lost an image during software use this evening. I'd imagine there could be an issue with the cables connecting the top screen to the bottom of the unit (seening as it usuall happpens on wake up and is progressively getting more frequent ie. the hinges are getting more and more use).

Anyone else have similar issues? I'd much rather not return the unit to the shop (bought a few eShop games, gameplay records, etc), but it seems to be getting more frequent and as mentioned, has began to happen during normal use, rather than just on wake up.

    Ta for any advice :)

Opened my 3ds this morning, the top screen was dim. This had never happened before I read your thread so I hold you responsible. After restarting, opening and closing a few times and some gentle wiggling I found squeezing the right hinge fixed it. Which scares the shut out of me since it's only a couple of months old and treated with kid gloves. I had similar probs on my DSLite after it got a fair amount of abuse, the hinge on that eventually came off so I'm not optimistic. If you're under warranty I'd take advantage while you can.

    Damn right!

I've had my 3DS for the guts of a year now and haven't had any kind of screen problems like this. It's definitely a malfunction.

If you've updated your 3DS to the latest software then it will include a tool for transferring your system from one 3DS to another. If the shop is offering you a replacement then they will probably let you do a system transfer before you have to part with your old one. That'll save your eshop purchases anyway, I'm not sure what else it'll save.

And if they don't, then insist on it!!!

Do both systems have to have that software installed or is it enough for the source system to have it?

I'd expect that both would have to have it.

Thanks for your replies folks :)

It's progressed to being proper buggered now :(

The transfer requires you to be connected to the net with both consoles at the same time, and i'd imagine that their stock is from before the recent firmware update that facilitates transfer.

So, err, bit of a **** situation really. We'll see how it pans out though :)

If they're replacing it for you though, then the new one will be yours too, so you can make sure it's updated (in the shop) and do the transfer there and then. This kind of thing is why Ninty made this functionality available!

Assumes the shop has internet access... Can't say I've ever gotten a Spotpass in Smyths or HMV.

Crap, I knew I'd regret buying off Amazon... I think I'll see how mine goes over the next few months (has happened twice in 3 days but only on opening the screen) and then gauge the cost of losing it for a few weeks to Nintendo's warranty repair over the cost of buying the part (if/when available) from Deal Extreme or similar and fitting myself.

Although given I still haven't screwed my DS back together after replacing the touchscreen in 2009 maybe I should let the professionals handle this?

    This is how mine started...

    Sorry :D

Well, the screen packed in, the shop were happy to accomodate a replacement, everything got transfered and i now have a new console with a hinge good enought to be introduced to the family :D

Well, for the benefit of those unfortunates who follow, as of 29/2/12 my top screen is also almost completely shagged, so it took roughly 2 months from first incident to unacceptable degree of failure.

The final straw was when it dropped out during a RE:R raid - Hatzi, if you're reading this, that's the reason I suddenly stopped shooting at Biobeasties and started running around in a circle shooting at the ground. Repair request logged with Nintendo, will see how that goes.

Funnily enough, since I clicked submit on the Nintendo service repair form, the screen has been fine... there must be a Cluon emitter near by...
