Toyota Estima cutting out

Hi, I have a 00 reg Japanese import Toyota Estima 2.4L petrol automatic that keeps cutting out when I take my foot off the gas no matter what speed I am doing. When I start it up from cold (overnight) it does not cut out, but after I drive for a period of time (any length of time be it 2 minutes or an hour) and park for any length of time (again be it 2 minutes or an hour) it cuts out if I don't keep my foot on the accelerator pedal.

Anyone any ideas what may be the problem?

    Cheers

    Air mass meter??

They use a map sensor not an air mass meter.

Those engines are fairly basic so if you have no engine warning light on then you likely looking at a split vacume pipe or a throttle body gasket or similar. The vacume/breather pipes on these are prone to heat damage due to the position of the engine.

Impossible to gauge without knowing what's wrong.

Cheers for the info. Off to the mechanics and then off to the breakers yard for parts I guess (hope).

Couple of sites that may help you out: -
    teoc.ws
    estima-motoring.co.uk

Had a qick look. Overheating is not uncommon on these motors and if you are suffering from this then you may have the thermal sensors shutting then engine off at idle.

Are your heaters blowing hot on demand? What's your coolant level like ? Check the oil filler cap for white gunk.

Of course it could be something as simple as fuel filter, plugs or leads.

Check the coolant indicators as above then start with the cheap/easy options - start with fuel filter.

Spoke to a Toyota garage and they asked me had the battery been changed recently, I advised them it had and they said it needed to be driven 50 miles or so because it may have lost its settings if the battery change took over 'x' amount of time and if I drove it the 50 miles or so it would reset itself. Brought the car to a mechanic (not a toyota specialist) and he suggested that the fuel injector could be knackered and cost up to a grand to replace. I'm going to drop it up the the Toyota specialist and get a definitive answer.

Plug it into a computer and read the fault codes, hope the "Toyota Specialist" will not rip you off =]

You don't need a Toyota specialist, just a good mechanic. Saying that it could be a fuel injector and might cost x amount to repair is sh1te talk IMO.

Did he actually carry out any tests to see what might be wrong with it?

OP, did you carry out any of the suggested actions?

I drive one of these and know a bit about their weak points.

Of course, it's entirely up to you if you want to throw money at main dealers :)

No tests carried out on vehicle yet apart form a look over by a mechanic from a mainstream garage. I rang the Toyota specialist and they told me they dont deal with Japanese imports so he referred me to a company that specialises in these vehicles. I'm dropping it in on Friday for him to check out.

I'm afraid I wouldn't exactly be the most mechanically minded i.e. not a clue about cars. :(

A Toyota specialist who doesn't deal in imports is not a specialist IMO.

There is nothing different when it comes diagnosis and repairs between import and non import.

That explains it so.....too many dealers can't be arsed if the computer doesn't tell them what's wrong:rolleyes:
