Will people from the Republic of Ireland have to pay when in Northern Ireland?

A prescription issued in the Republic of Ireland is treated as a private prescription and a fee will be charged by the pharmacist in Northern Ireland. If the person has been treated by a Northern Ireland GP and issued with a Health Service prescription they will not pay a charge.

Should you not get a medical card regardless of means if you are a cross-border worker?

Those working in the north are automatically entitled to a medical card if living in the south. But the issue here is whether southern prescriptions will be honoured in the 6 Counties, it appears that they aren't.

A person in those circumstances could opt to register with a doctor in the north as well, and then could have their northern NHS prescriptions honoured in a northern pharmacy.

There might be an EU law issue there if someone was really put out by the setup and was prepared to dig it up.
