Copy Protected DVD Won't Play

    Hi,

I have a HP Elitebook 8530p with Windows Vista Business Service Pack 2. Its an Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53Ghz with 2GB RAM and 32-bit Operating System. The DVD player is a Sony Optiarc dvd rw ad-7580s.

I have not added any new hardware and have checked that my drivers are up-to-date. I use VLC to play my videos.

However, my laptop will not play copy protected dvd's. I do not get any error message. The DVD player reads the dvd over and over again. It did this for over 5 hours last week but did not play the dvd or give any error message. Older dvd's that I own which do not have copy protection play without any problem.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Maybe you could try to rip the DVD with handbrake or aneesoft.

    Hi Dyer,

I installed the software but no change. The dvd drive is in a loop of reading the protected dvd's. Unprotected dvd's play first time in VLC without a problem.

This is what DVDFab shows after entering a protected dvd (no disc in drive):

Info for drive [E:\] (DVDFab Passkey 8.0.4.2)
    Vendor: Optiarc
    Product: DVD RW AD-7581S
    Revision: 4H03
    Vendor specific: Apr17,2008
    Drive region control: RPC II
    Drive region: 2
    User changes left: 4
    Vendor resets left: 4

    No disc in drive.

hmmm weird. has this always been the case? if so your drive might have hardware/firmware protection, you might be able to get around it with a firmware update or patch.

    other things to try..

    reset DRM

another dvd decrypter to try: http://www.dvd43.com/

or as other user pointed out.. might be able to rip the dvd to your hddrive and mount the iso or playback the files that way.

your drive region is 2 maybe the disc your trying to play is a different region
    REGION 1 — USA, Canada
REGION 2 — Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 — S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 — Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
REGION 5 — Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
    REGION 6 — China
REGION 7 — Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
REGION 8 — Reserved for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
REGION 0, 9, or REGION ALL — Discs are uncoded and can be played worldwide
surprised dvdfab can't crack it though and the older discs that work are all region free ? how many disc have you tried to play that won't ? there not just damaged discs are they or does your drive just need a blast of air from a can !

    Hi All,

After testing the listed suggestions I have come to the conclusion I have a faulty DVD drive. I tried the selected DVDs in a similar laptop & they played 1st time. I also connected a external DVD drive & they played without a problem.

    Thanks for the help.
