    Hi,

Genuinely don't have a clue about the spec of laptops

Could somebody point me in the right direction for what I'm looking for.

    - €500/550 budget approx.
    - used mainly for web browsing, music, dvds. not a gamer at all really.
    - would like a good bit of hard drive - have lots of music & photos.
    - would be using it for a bit of work on microsoft office aswell.

I'm not sure what brands are decent. Sony & Apple seem to be way out of my budget straight away anyway.

How about HP or Lenovo? I've seen a few HP laptops

    There's this HP for £325 http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/HP_ProBook_4530s_1099521.html

or this Lenovo for £535 http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_IdeaPad_Z570_1091049.html

Or would it be worth looking into getting a net book and buying a 1TB external hard drive for music and photos etc.

No, lifespan is shorter on Netbooks and externals are quite expensive at the minute, prices are still going up actually.

One of these anyway, price is delivered.
    Asus €470
    Lenovo €494
    Lenovo €494
    Asus €550
    Toshiba €555
Lenovo €580 (This one if planning on playing the odd game)

Good assortment there, dif screen sizes and most have 500GB HDDs.

HP don't deserve a sale with their history, in budget Acer 5750 is prone to overheating (according to a few reviews, true or not, I don't know), Sony have the priced hiked up cuz their "SONY", AMDs in budget Chips are weak, they come with good integrated graphics but so what.

    Apple.....pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft.
