Looking to get my car serviced, 1.4 mk4 golf. Service is due in march but somehow I have a bit of money left after Xmas so was gonna get it done now.

Reckon I'll get the timing belt done due to age, mileage is fine. So timing belt, water pump, plus standard service. I think the throttle body may need cleaning too. I gave it a clean myself last summer but didn't remove it as I don't trust myself so it wasn't a perfect job.

Also, the brakes haven't been changed in 20,000 miles, they feel fine but I'm far from an expert. Would it just be a matter of inspection on those or would people recommend changing them at a certain mileage?

    Any help appreciated.

I am pretty sure that my wife uses ISA motors in Blackrock, and they seem great - very honest.

I'll second the recommendation for ISA.

Thanks lads, they quoted 650 for belt pump and service, sounds about right?

I think that sounds a bit expensive, i'd have been expecting around €500. That said i'm not too up to date with these things, so let's see what others think?

Bit on the expensive side. Our prices on those jobs would be €325 for the belt kit and pump and €175 for a full service including all filters and spark plugs.

Cheers. I'll keep making some phone calls so.

We charge 149 for the service and and 350 for the belt kit and wp so either way 650 sound a bit expensive but what are they including for that price?

Remember also that quoted prices are generally open to negotiation. Re the brake pads, there's no reason why they should necessarily need replacement after 20k miles.

Try Terry Ryan Cars in Foxrock (01-2894474), myself & my dad have used him for years. May or may not be the cheapest quote you'll receive but they only really deal with VW, Audi & Mercedes and know the cars inside out.

I used this crowd recently and thought they were brilliant. VAG franchisees and they'll do a quote for you - http://www.autodynamic.ie/service/service-packages/special-opening-service-offer/
