Pool free ball rule

Whats the rule when it comes to a free ball in pool? Do I nominate any ball and get two shots or is it hit the white ball anywhere even if it does not hit your colour and you get another shot?

My yellow was covering his pocket for the black, he hit the black and potted my yellow and I was then snookered behind his black so I nominated the black and hit it and then potted my yellow and then won the game. :D

    Sour grapes?

    Thanks.

Unfortunately there are about 6 different official rules of 8ball, + another couple of 100 variants depending on what pub you are playing in (must play up table, stick pocket, one shot on black, blah blah).

Bit in general what you did with the free ball seems perfectly fine to me.

I would have to agree with AJ.... depends from pub to pub.... but what you did is the most logical rule.
