Right, I'm headin off snowboarding at the end of jan and this year I got a Gopro, it's my 4th year away now. :D:D

I was wondering has any one been using a Gopro and know what are the best mounts? Have the head strap, a mount on my helmet( its a lidl one so it has to be side mounted) and a mono pole.

Does any one have any idea how good or bad the chest mount or any other type of mount is good to use??

Yeah I used one last season. Best mounts for skiing are chest mount and the bike mount to attach it to a pole. The helmet mount is good (not the strap a the sticky ones) but you dont generally get a lot of arms or skis in the shot which makes it pretty boring. chest you get arms and skis appearing in the shots. I would use R3 (720p 60fps) or R4 (960p 30fps) for all your filming. R3 can be slowed down for nice flowing slowmotion shots.

I also attached it to my ski boot via the vented helmet mount and a bit of DIY. Attached to your ski looking back is class but if you dont own the skis you may not want to do that. I've a load of vids from 3 Valleys last year on my youtube channel, didnt have a chest mount, friend of mine did so saw the vids from it. His gopro and the chesty was stolen a few days in so watch your gear!

I've been using r3 and r5 alot so far, have been going for spins on my bike testing it out in different mode, but haven't done any editing to slow down the r3... Will give r4 a go tho,

I've been looking around at vids and the chesty does look like its one of the best bits to use, as a matter of interest, wen ur friend got his nightdress, was it when he was out and about? Or where he was stayin... It's the main thing I'm worried about as their very small and I'd say can easily walk...

Did you attach it to your ski with the atesive flat mount? Did it hold on ok?

    Thanks for the reply :D

Side mount upside down on the side of the the helmet reduces noise. Have some footage of it below.

Pole mounts are really good if used right. If you strap it to your back pack and get it to shoot down on you from above.

    Enjoy

R5 is very narrow on a GoPro 1 so I didn't use it much. R4 gives you maximum viewing angle up and down left and right but its not wide screen unfortunately so you might not want to use it. Its nice for getting skis and arms in the shot. R3 slow mo is class and easy enough to do once you understand the editing software your using and it supports 60fps properly. The free GoPro Cineform software can do it easily you just change the FPS from 60 to 30 for a 50% slow down for example.

My mates was lifted while in his backpack. He was having a coffee waiting to meet me for lunch. Put the bag on the table right beside him and it was lifted from under his nose. While he was down at the police station reporting it there was a holiday rep in there screaming at the cops because guys had kicked in doors in one of the hotels and maced the occupants before robing them 2 nights in a row!! At the end of the day that nasty stuff is rare and majority of thefts over there are opportunity when people take their eye off their kit so just keep you head about you.

I didn't attach it to my rental ski's. If you are use a sticky mount and take the ski up to your room. It needs to be at room temp for at least 12 hours (should really be 24) for the glue to set on the provided sticky mounts. I read about a guy who used the square plastic pice from the packaging and some duct tape to attach it as well. Saw a vid of someone using the suction mount and it came off half way down the run as most ski's have a raised pattern on the ski. No idea about snow boards.

    Another quick question,

How many memory cards did you use on your trip?
I'm not too Keene on bringing a laptop/iPad in case it walks...
At the moment I have 3 16gb class 10 cards and half tempted on
Investing in a 32gb card too....

How long would you get out of a 32gb card?

I have one at the minute but am thinking about ordering another one (possibly two) so I don't have to bring the laptop with me.

The 64's aren't compatible with gorpos. I've seen mention of using them with the Hero2 but nothing conclusive. The worst case is they work up to 32gb and then you get corrupted data.

A week last year, filming half a day each day I shot 50GB of footage. How much you get on a card depends on the video mode you shoot in. I mainly shot in 720p 30fps and 960p 30fps with some 1080p 30fps and 720p 60fps.

This year I'd imagine it will be completely in 720p 60fps.

    What brands/classes are your cards?

The cards I have are adata class 10's that I picked up on a offer in maplin but when I was going to buy another there I saw reviews that they fail a lot so was thinking on buying a different brand, would a Kingston class 4 be too low

You need a class 6 minimum to film in 1080p or 720p 60fps. GoPro Hero2's need a Class 10 to do burst photos and rapid time lapse. I bought a 32gb class 10 for 27 euro from mymemory.co.uk all fine so far.

Was that my memory's own brand one? I have one of them at the minute and was going to pick up the same again. (got a voucher code with the last one for 50% off my next order but can't find it:mad:)

Yup, no problems recording in all modes and burst photos with it.

Can't remember the name of it at the moment as I didn't bring it with me this time, but to remove the need to take a laptop you can get card reader with a built in hard drive. Transfer all the video once the card is full and you are good to go again. Think it is something like a 300 gig drive I had in mine.
