Passat remote central locking

Hey, I bought an 1998 Passat and I have an issue with the remote central locking. Basically, the car came with 2 keys. 1 for opening and locking the doors and the other is the ignition key. The issue is with the key for the doors. It didnt work so I thought the battery was dead but when I opened it, the guts of the key were not there!!! So what I have is a flip key on a casing for the remote. I did a bit of research and spotted that if I buy a new key on ebay and get it cut that I can programme it in the door of the car by following a few simple steps. I just want to see if anyone has had this issue before and were you able to programme the remote yourselves? Is it as straight forward as it sounds? I also read something about the immobiliser having to be "paired" with the key but i dont think that will affect me as I use another key to start the car. I'd love to get the remote control central locking up and going again!

    Thanks.

up to 98 a remote key can only be added using vagcom or similar,99 onwards can be done manually but you will need 2 keys to operate the locks,
    hope this helps.
