I picked up a 002 Rack a few months ago from a guy selling off evrything in his home studio.

Fair play they guy threw in a few leads stands etc. Im certain there was a sound card, but of course now that I finally have a bit of time I cant find it.

Do I have to use a particular sound card or can a buy a number of them?

If I can choose any chance I could get a few recommendations? I wont be recording much more than my own stuff and some bits and pieces for friends etc. Preferably something not mad expensive.

Secondly, I have a Focusrite Octopre (from same guy) and I am wondering if it is connected directly to its own soundcard or into the 002.

    Thanks in advance.

the 002 as in the digidesign pro tools interface, this thing.

    http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct03/articles/digi002rack.htm
    this what you bought?

you seem a bit confused if this is what you bought, this is the interface

and the octopre connects to the 002 over adat or lightpipe.
dont think youll need the octopre yet, it just allows more similtanious inputs, but the 4 mic inputs on the 002 rack, and 4 line inputs and 8 out is plenty for you i imagine

Im sure the 4 mics and 4 line are loads, but while Im doing it I may as well have it all up and going.

Basically Im looking to find out to I use the optical out, SPIDF or Firewire into the PC. Obviously the Firewire is the handiest but I was certain there was a PCI Card that came with it so Im assuming thats what I should be using.

well does your computer accept firewire or pci?
both by the sounds of it or you wouldnt be asking.

this is a getting started guide
    archive.digidesign.com/support/docs/Getting_Started_002_Rack.pdf

id run firewire from 002 to the pc, the octopre uses adat to connect to the 002. i know you wanna get this stuff all hooked up and working now, but if your unsure/having problems, best leave it disconnected till you know the 002 is up and running within your current setup.

there are 2 firewire ports on the 002, you can daisy chain external hdd's and other stuff, thats why there is 2 connections.

    anything else?

Remember if you set up both run the digi002 as the master clock or you'll get interferance on the octopre channels.

Wouldn't you have to set the Octopre as the clock source?

I've got mine like that, as soon as it's the other way I get ghost clicks on the octopres channels.

    Works perfect.

Hey guys, sorry to bump a thread that had slipped off the front page, but would anyone care to clarify the above for me? I might have been doing it wrong. :o

It has to be done that way because the 002 does not have a discrete word clock output. Y'know, the BNC connector? So the only clock signal available is the one generated by the Octopre and embedded in the ADAT signal.

    Cheers, man.

I'm actually on a 003 Rack+, which (AFAIR) has a BNC output, but that's what I've been doing. Just had to be sure!
