Anyone else see the article written by John Mooney. Talks about the defence forces at a fourty year low in relation to numbers. Second last paragraph mentions the government are considering privatising the IAC..... interesting. Maybe it's some sections of the IAC.

The fact is that very little of what the Air Corps does could not be done by the private sector , perhaps uncomfortable for some.

I'd personally hate to see it but realistically it would probably make sense to do so at least for a few years anyway at least until the country gets back on its feet.

If it happens, it won't be a temporary measure.

Exactly, these things can't be undone. It's strange how people will complain about how the defence forces don't have/do this or that, but always look for them to make cuts from their already very limited resources. Let's not forget defence was making reforms during the Celtic tiger period, cutting numbers and increasing skills, flexibility and efficiency while other departments were going nuts with the public purse.

Since we'll never have fast jets and they bought the wrong choppers why waste the limited resources on a glorified taxi service. All the jobs the Air Corps do can be done by civilians or transferred to other parts of the DF, even if we did need it for our defence it's not capable.

We've limited means and realistically there are going to be more cuts. Get rid of the Air Corp and assign the personal to other areas where they can benefit our military.

The Air Corps aren't going to improve and the lack of investment will kill it slowly. Better go out when you have a chance of saving some of the skills than hold on till your obsolete.

Aren't significant amounts of the RAF outsourced? Only major maintenance, nothing frontline.

I know BAe maintain the Saudi Tornados as well, so this isn't ground breaking. If it increases efficiencies then why not?

RAF also outsource much of their training and target operating aircraft, these are just 2 areas they have hived off to the private sector and achieved significant savings doing so.

An RAF Bae146 was in Dublin for repainting at the end of december, picture of it in the Aviation section of boards.

Why not incorporate the helicopters and maybe the pc-9's into the army and outsource the base maintenance and maybe some of the basic flying training and start using them to properly support the army and start sending them abroad. The casa's could be incorporated into the navy and the same thing done with the base maintenance and basic flying training. Scrap the glorified taxi's for government. Outsource the air ambulance and set up a dedicated air ambulance service. If all this was done you would also save on pay because presumably there would be no need for the higher ranks of the air corps anymore.
