Running. running, running

Ok, up until 1/2 months ago I hated running except the odd burst of treadmill. It hurt and I wasn't arsed.
I went for a walk, it was really cold so I tried to jog and get home quickly and found it really easy, ended up running 4.7 miles.
I was delighted, I couldn't in fact believe it so I did it again later in the week. This went scarily well. There was pain and sore lungs, my smoking habit supplied quiet a solid pot hole filler along the way but I enjoyed it for the first time in my life.
So I think I have this running bug, iv started recording times etc. I did some research and it turns out my times, while not great by any stretch, are not completely retarded.
4.7 miles in 33 is my pb in two months of running. Only got this once, usually times are around the 40 mark. Believe me for me this is massive.
This is a really long winded self appreciating way of asking your advice on how to increase distance/speed before my first 10k on jan 22nd. I'm 28 and heavy but with a body fat percentage of 15.5%.
How do I get to a point where I can hit sub 45 for a 10k. If I can do 55 on jan 22 I'd be over the moon.
    Thanks for your time.

One of these days I'm going to read 'I've always hated javelin but this morning I picked one up and threw it and it was easy and now I love it. How can I throw further?' :)

Seriously it's great when someone gets the running bug and are full of enthusiasm. There's no cure you know daitheoghan!

First of all, set yourself a first race target - there will be tons of them in the spring. A 10k is an excellent choice to start. Second, start following one of the many generic programmes out there. Third, don't run everything at top pace - learn to slow down on your longer runs or you'll burn out or get injured.

Last and most important, enjoy your running and make it a habit for life. Not much else to do in Kerry anyway ;)

    Good luck.

And that's from someone stuck on some island in a backwater channel or something. :)

Am finding it hard to fit in a run during my day so am either running in the pitch dark with my cavetorch strapped to my forehead or same again early morning before work!! Its taking the joy out I gotta admit but am looking for something more social, fun and in daylight on a Saturday afternoon North County Dublin!!!!! Want to train for 10k-half Marathon! :) Must endure two weeks of hurting before I am back light on my feet again....!!!
