I got a 3DS for Christmas and tried to update the software last night and then again today but it the progress bar fills up to about 1/8 then the screen goes black and this message comes up

I can't use the eShop or anything without the update. Anyone had this problem or should I just return it and look for a new one? I've tried updating it about 20 times

Yep, had that before. Turn off firewall protection in your router settings, once done, switch it back on :)

Router settings on the DS or do I need to do that through a computer?

No your actual router itself, done through your pc - normally 192.168.0.1/192.168.1.1

Nothing worked, tried it on two routers, both with firewalls off then the dude in Smiths tried it with no luck so they said they'd give me a new one, with some gentle persuation he gave me a white one so I'm happy out, and it updated first try!

Glad you got it sorted. Can't explain why it couldn't update though.

Weird one alright, maybe there was a connection setting messed up somewhere

Aye, it was a Black 3DS running an older software than the white one I got, they were both running 2. something when bought but the new one had the eStore already on it before the update to 3.0.

Tis very strange the new one done it straight away with no hassle though.

The white is far nicer too! :D
