Installed Avira, AVG files still there?

I discovered that my AVG had expired - I thought I had renewed it, but evidently not - so I tried to remove it, but when I tried to remove it it claimed there was an error. I could not open it from the All Programs menu. I downloaded Avira and it said it would remove AVG, and claimed it had. AVG is still there though, a folder full of files (I finally got into it through a search option). How do I get rid of it?

Avira does not seem to have a firewall, is that the case? I will switch back on the Windows one.

All the hassle started when I installed (or rather someone installed it for me ) Spybot. First I turned off a lot of the options as it was running several scans everytime I opened anything, but in the end I had to uninstall it as it was causing all sorts of odd problems. I thought Spybot was very reliable, has anyone else had problems with it?
