    Howdy all,

To anyone driving up or down the M1 this morning be very careful between Balbriggan and Ardee, There was about 11 cars in the ditch on that stretch of road due to ice on the road. It was especially bad at the Balbriggan turnoff and the Dunleer turnoff.

    So slow down :)

Im chalking it down to it being a bank holiday and the local authority figuring not alot of people would use the road today.

Came up that road this morning. Counted 9 cars in hedges and one blocking a lane northbound, looked pretty smashed up.
Traffic had slowed to around 40mph, although some eejits were still zooming along in the outside lane (passed one of these in a hedge further along.)

I'd say it's more like they don't like paying bank holiday rates

Bulk of the M1 from Balbriggan to Ardee is not under the control of any local authority to begin with. From the Balbriggan North junction all the way to where it becomes N1 north of Dundalk it is under the control of Celtic Roads Group and its their responsibility to maintain it in all ways, including gritting.

How about the stretch from junction 5 (Balbriggan South/Lusk) to Junction 6 (Balbriggan/Naul)? I saw 2 cars in the ditch at that point
Regardless of who is responsible for their maintenance, its nothing short of a disgrace that the motorway was left untreated with the (presumption) attitude of "shure its only a bank holiday". Who ever is responsinble for that motorway utterly failed in their duty this morning!

There seemed to be two particularly bad patches, each stretching for a few hundred yards. The first centred on Junction 6, which was the area I seen 5 accidents and the second around the Ardee exit where there were at least 4 damaged cars.
As I said earlier, traffic was crawling along for the most part, but not because of warnings on the radio or overhead signs, simply because people had driven past wrecked cars.
We pulled in to the second service area, south of Dundalk, for about half an hour. I was expecting Garda activity or some warnings about black ice, when I resumed the journey, but no, not a thing.

Many hours later some of the Radio stations were still claiming the road was closed, I'm not surprised people don't pay heed to warnings as in this country they are often bull****. :(

At about 11 this morning i saw an m50 gritter around j6 Balbriggan seems strange that they would be along the m1 this far north anyway, i do not know if they where spreading as i was heading northbound, they where going southbound
i though this was fingal county councils area

As said earlier, J6 and up is no council, its CRG. M50 gritters are also no councils, they're M50 Concessions. I would imagine that CRG either had no grit, no working gritter(s) or no staff and 'borrowed' M50C's ones.

Toll roads and often nearby non-tolled sections of the same road are under the control of the toll operator not the L.A.
