    Hi,

My family adopted a rescue dog a few months ago. The whole family adores him but we are having a problem keeping him in. We live out in the country so due to roads, sheep and other livestock it is extremely dangerous for him to get out. Our house and yard is enclosed by walls and gates and before we adopted him we got more gates installed. He can jump over the wall which is 5ft. He is indoors some of the time but as he is a big dog, he needs to be out in the garden also. We have a large garage where we have a bed etc for him and we had planned to leave him in there if we were going out for a short time however he can opened the door even when it is locked. It is not an option to have him in the house all the time as he is a german shepard/collie cross and is a big enough dog. He is brought on long walks every day and given huge amounts of attention it's only if he is left for a short time that he manages to get out. Could anybody think of any solutions? We were thinking something like a big run as we have loads of space? At the moment he is left in the house if we are going out but that is not a permanent solution as the yard is large enough for him to run around in during the day it's just a worry if anyone takes their eye off him for a second he's gone running to play with the ponies across the road!!

Put something on top of the wall so that he cannot jump out.
Fix the lock on the garage so that he cannot get out.

our dog would escape from alcatraz,we god a big timber run built in the garden, nice warm dog house inside, plenty of dog toys and a treat when she is in there, only solution, cause u dont want farmers knocking on the door saying next time he enters the field with the sheep he will be shot!

The lock in the garage isn't broken. He's able to open it on one side. It's not so much the garage, it's we want a secure area in the yard that he can be in. There's a lot of wall surrounding the whole house and it's a finished wall so it's difficult to build on top of it. It's already quite high too. The place will start looking like a prison if we put anymore on top of it! Would some kind of built run be suitable for a large dog?

That sounds like a good idea! Just have to try and figure out how big to make it etc so the dog is happy in there.

we have a german shep who is an indoor dog. of course she is let out into the gdn but her and our other dogs including a st bernard, when we leave the house are brought in for the simple reason i would be scared they could be robbed.

if the dog is well exercised and stimulated it doesn't need a massive amount of space. Our back garden is TINY, really small even for an estate garden but during week the dog gets walked in morning, company at lunch for an hour including game of ball and big long walk in the evening. She is happy out between 9-1 and 2-6 in the garden wit the odd Kong/bone. We also use feeding toys rather than just feeding from a bowl. Also not all dogs like to be indoor all the time. My dog got sick in October and was inside constantly without walks for 2weeks and hated it. She would go out to pee and refuse to come back inside.
