My laptop has just had a melt down, downloaded updates, it shut down and now all the happens when I turn it on is it tells me that Windows is opening, then the screen goes black and... nothing.
Anyone got any suggestions?? There is loads of stuff on there that I need.

Turn on the laptop and immediately keep pressing F8 until you get a menu. Choose Safe Mode and see are you able log in.

Have managed to log on in Safe Mode, but there is nothing on desktop so can't access anything??
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

When you say you can't access anything, can you even see the Start button and taskbar along the bottom of the screen?

Nope, no start button, black screen saying safe or safe mode

I have started running the test options when you press F2 or F3 and so far they are all passing, if that means anything.

also F8 should give you the option to restore to an earlier date.

Great, will try that when the test things have finished running.
    Fingers crossed!

When it starts in Safe Mode, it says 'Loading Windows Files' followed by a list of loaded files.
    The there's an error message:
"LogonUI.exe -Bad Image" click ok and that pops again and after clicking ok second time it allows log on password to me added.
    Then another message
    "userinit.exe -Bad Image"
    Then 'preparing your desktop'
The black screen with 'Safe Mode' in each corner and
    'Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)

    I may cry

once you turn on your laptop you might need to wait 3 seconds then hit the F8 key, if this does not work then try 5 seconds and hit it, there is a certain point it needs to be hit when just switched on,

you can not see it so you will have to play with it IE. 3, 5, 6, 7, seconds once you hit the F8 key hold it for a couple of seconds.

Just got a 'Fix Your Computer Option' when I kept pressing F8.
It asked to remove an external device which was connected, iPod was connected when things went wallop but unhooked it ages ago.
    Hope this works.
Thanks a million for your help, really appreciate it.

Is this Vista or Windows 7 ? (Vista I'd guess)-- edit wrong. win 7, 7601.

After you log in in safe mode, can you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to bring up the menu.
If this appears, can you choose "Task Manager"?
If this appears, click "File \ New Task \ Run"
type in "explorer" and hit enter.

Tell us if the desktop and start menu are loaded as a result and are displayed. Or even an explorer window.

    Failing that...

The system recovery mode can be reached by putting a windows installation disk into the CD drive and booting from it. (CD for the same version of windows, preferably one that came with the machine or a recovery DVD that you created when starting the machine for the first time.)

    It's Windows 7.
It's currently doing a restore to an earlier date.
If that doesn't work, I'll be back! ;)

Thanks a million guys, it's working again, such a relief, really appreciate the help.
I am now going to do the sensible thing and copy all the important stuff to an external hard-drive.
    Thanks again.
