Removing excess sealer/paste from bath tap pipes??

I want to change my bath tap to a mixer bath tap setup.

Whats the best way to remove loads of excess dried on sealer/gunk from where a bath tap joins the copper water pipe?

The previous plumber slapped on a load of this paste/sealer/gunk stuff around the pipe, under the bath. Its now all dried on and a nightmare to work around.

I dont want to try and force the tap nut down over the stuff and risk damaging threads or snapping the pipe and causing a flood.:(

Does this sealer stuff break off easily or can it be disolved off??
    Any advice?

    Thanks.:)

It's probable just Boss White, chip of the heavy stuff with a screwdriver, undoing the cap should remove the rest.

Yep, that's the smell that lingers around plumbers, even when there're dead.
