    Hi Lads,

I've 4 episodes of the Sopranos left to watch - epic stuff - absolutely brilliant. Never watched it first time around, and it's been great to watch it when i want and not have to wait a week for the next episode.

Right, the story is, I'd like to get stuck into something else pretty much straight away. Any of you guys recommend any other TV shows that i could download buy the box set of???

You'll probably be pointed in the direction of The Wire, if you're wanting to stick with HBO, that is. Have you checked the sticky at the top of the forum?

    Criminal Minds never grabbed me
Seen BSG - was the best sci-fi ever, followed closely by the Stagrate series'.

Haven't seen breaking bad, the wire or the west wing.... Guess I'll give them a shot! thanks

I've yet to see the Wire and Breaking Bad. I believe they are really good.

I've recently started Sons Of Anarchy and I think it's great. That's what I went on to after the Sopranos.

Breaking Bad. Started episode 1 earlier. Just heading up to bed to continue my excessive farting whilst watching episode 2.

    It looks good so far.

No mention of the excellent 'Homeland' yet..

I'll throw the magnificant Spartacus into the mix, you need to watch the first season and then a short prequel season called Blood in the Sand.

Have to agree with most of the other posters re Breaking Bad, Dexter, Mad Men, Six Feet Under and Lost.

Did you ever get to see The West Wing, old now but still great.
It must be assumed you've seen House??

If you want lots of episodes and something shorter than 41 minutes I'd recommend Weeds, Entourage, Californication and The United States of Tara, all have their moments and some great writing and acting.

Something comical? The US Office or How I met your Mother, both with lots of seasons.

I'm at various stages of box sets on most of the above and it's great viewing.

Deadwood, only show I'd rate above the wire

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 655 ✭✭✭marvsins

Deadwood is a must, no question. I'd highly recommend The Shield, the wire, Sons of Anarchy, Boardwalk Empire and Nurse Jackie if you are looking something lighter.

Indeed, along with The Shield and The Corner (another quite TRUE story classic!).

    Finished shows that remained good:
"The Wire" naturally - best show ever.
"The Shield" is another excellent show that remains pretty consistent in quality for its seven season run.
"Deadwood" - Great western. Be warned it doesn't end cleanly due to it being effectively axed.
"The West Wing" - Top political drama.

Shows airing that are still good:
"Breaking Bad" - One of the best shows currently airing. Four seasons so far, all of high quality.
"Boardwalk Empire" - Two excellent seasons so far. Hopefully it'll continue.
"Game of Thrones" - One season aired only so far but, as it's adapted from a great series, I've high hopes for future seasons.

Shows airing that deserve a warning:
"Dexter" - Seasons 1, 2, and 4 are great but Seasons 3,5,6 mean that the show should come with a warning about serious quality drops.

The two seasons of Forbrydelsen are pretty fantastic too.

Been mentioned before but The Shield would be a fantasic watch to follow up on The Sopranos.

Breaking Bad is the best show currently running at the moment. 4 seasons in and it will probably be the guts of a year before the fifth and final season airs so plenty of time to watch it.

Dexter although uneven is must watch. The first two seasons are fantastic. Season three isn't great but just about watchable. Season four is fantastic. Seasons five and six are a complete and utter waste of time though.

Homeland has just recently finished in the States and is another excellent show. Little bit of a weak ending IMO but still extremely entertaining stuff and easy to recommend.

I'd also throw Millenium into the hat. It's a three season show from Chris Carter, the man behind The X Files and I'm sure it's the show he always wanted to make. Quite dark but enthralling all the same.

no real need for bashing, either recommend it or not, the good far outweighs the bad in dexter,

as much as i liked the wire if your in the mood for a nice long run of great TV go for The West Wing over 150 eps, vs the wires 60 eps,

also Lost and 24 were great shows,

Breaking Bad is gonna give any show a run for its money, but your probably better off waiting a year for the final season to air and then you can watch it in one go,

also if youre not watching it Fringe is another great show currently airing,

so if you wanna start at the top and work your way down id say
    The West Wing
    The Wire
    Lost
    24
    Breaking Bad
    Fringe

if your gonna go backwards id skip Fringe and Breaking Bad till there finnished,

    you lucky sod:D

Actually haven't seen The Sopranos myself yet, one of those things I kept meaning to watch but never got around to it, will have to sort that.

    I'd recommend:

    The Wire
    Breaking Bad
    Boardwalk Empire
    Supernatural
    Game of Thrones
    Walking Dead
    Fringe

Have heard good things about Homeland and Rescue Me, must have a goo at both of them soon, have also heard about a new show called the Boss, think it's sorta similar to Boardwalk.

Avoid Terra Nova, I stuck with it for about 4 episodes and felt like smashing the telly!

ETA: another two worth watching if you're a sci-fi fan are Babylon 5 and Deep Space 9.

+1 Boardwalk Empire - If you like the Sopranos I reckon you'd enjoy this, I know I did

Am I alone in thinking Rescue Me was an absolutely terrible series and has no place amongst all the other ones mentioned? There are a fair few I personally don't care much for but appreciate that they're quality programs but Rescue Me is just awful on every level.

The writing for the first years of 'Rescue Me' was absolutely top-notch..

.. quality did decline sharply in later seasons though!

Don't forget the excellent 'Oz', which I think you would enjoy.

    +1

Six series worth, and because it's a few years old now, it's the old series length of 20+ episodes rather than the new 13 episode length that has become popular. Excellent cast and makes The Sopranos look like a teddy bears' picnic.
