Friend going to have a look at one and I've heard 100k or 10 years old. Is that correct? 100k sounds very high .

    Zafira I presume?

They are decent reliable cars and are generally fairly cheap to repair if they do suffer an issue. Not the most spacious 7 seater by any stretch of the imagination though.

How often to change timing belt? First 100k?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Pretty sure it's ten years or 100000 miles, water pump isn't belt driven, far as I know

Get one with aircon, or buy a verso

Personnally I hate them. Only had them as hire cars for a few days at a time but that was enough. Horrible square everything inside that I hate but all Opels of that generation are the same. My back was sore after an hour or two on a motorway, both as a front passenger and driving. Middle bench seat was a bit of an anoyance comign from our Scenics with individual seats. Havign to move the bench seat to put the 2 rearmost seats up or down is a monumental **** up imo. Just all rounf more awkward to use ompared to the Scenic and I couldnt take to it at all.

How many kids, how many adults, how old are the kids, and do they need luggage space as well as 7 seats?

Scratch any diesels off the list so.

The zafira you were asking about comes with a 1.6 engine so tax/running costs would be lower then most others.

Corolla verso is a reliable choice as is something like the Honda stream or mazda 5/mpv/premacy.

The Renault scenic is probably the best for interior layout for family use....but the most troublesome by far IMO.

    What engine, year etc ?

    We've a 2004 1.6 petrol that needs changing every 40,000 miles.

Grand Scenic? The ordinary Scenic only has three seats... I've been looking around at 7 seaters and the Zafira or the Grand Scenic are coming up tops... if the family can afford to run it though, the Chrysler Grand Voyager is a beauty of a 7 seater for the layout in the back alone.

It's presale. Just trying to find out info on it.

    Just found out it's a petrol 1.6

She may have been told no timing belt needed until first 100k which rings alarm bells if it has 70 K on the clock.

Will get her to quiz garage if any belt was ever done to date.

If no belt was ever done is there very likely damage done to engine? A reason to maybe/def not buy?

    Thanks

If she's only doing 5k a year and the car is only 6 years old, why the alarm bells?

There can't be any damage done to the engine unless the belt fails.

The interval for an 06 1.6 petrol is 150,000kms or 10 years.

If running costs are an issue then stay away from a grand voyager:eek:

I'd do some research on the issues people have with the grand scenic if your considering one.

We own an 06 Verso, 70K mls on clock and nothing but usual wear and tear Tyres, Pads Oil Filters etc have been replaced on it. 100% reliable & solid. Only drawback is when 7 seats up you are literally loosing your boot space.

The Chrysler is a full size MPV in the Espace/C8/Galaxy segment.

Its also a deathrap in a crash :)

I was driven in one of these for work purposes and found it incredibly cramped.

Plus possibly due to crap tyres, the thing got two punctures in two days, so out we all piled in our business suits to change the poxy tyre

It wasn't a rental either, and the boot struggled to cope with our laptop bags and cases.

Put me off them for life.

Is that because it has virtually no boot? I couldn't afford to run one anyway... what with the 3.2 litre petrol engine... just wondering...

I'd love a Zafira but himself doesn't like driving them (we've test drove a few) are the Grand Scenics and normal Scenics (we've only three kids and no plans for expansion anytime soon so were thinking of going for a Scenic or a Xsara Picasso...) really bad?

No, just has a really bad crash rating:
    http://www.euroncap.com/results/chrysler/voyager.aspx?class=b7160ee7-ae8a-4065-8588-61b7e4598ed3

We've had an 05 Grand Scenic since early 08 and its been perfect. Had a 00 Scenic I for 2 years before that and it never missed a beat either.

Both seem to attract damage though. :) Both were the victim of rear drivers side quater panel damage from peopel hitting them ( current one was hit and run in a car park). I managed to forget I was parked beside the end of a trolly bay in Liffey valley and turned in to it :o and the missed spun it in the wet and needed a new boot door due to cheap ****ty tyres (never again).

Xsara Picasso are only 5 seaters. The C4 Picasso can be got in 7 seater.

The Zafira is the only one in the class I'm properly against. I just really hate the thing. I honestly dont know how anyone can buy the likes of the Vectra from that era either.

Sure it was a Zafira? Doesn't sound like one from your description.

My wife uses one every day, a 07. We have put about 20k kms on it in 18 months that we have had it and it's not missed a beat. It's now coming up on 110k kms. It's had every service at the required interval but never needed more than the standard service parts from what I can see. It's not a fun car to drive and could benefit from a bigger engine than the 1.6 petrol. But it's not any better or worse than I'd expect from a 7 seater.

I rented a Zafira over Xmas. Fairly horrible. Fan would only work on setting 4 so very noisy (to match the engine). Middle seatbelt broken, as were straps to lift rear seats. And stupid Opel indicator stalk of course. That said, if you need 7 seats and it's cheap...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,147 ✭✭✭pm.

hi we got a mazda 5 this year and i cant fault its got a 1.8 litre engine so it has that bit more power than the opel. like any of these cars when the back seats are up you dont have a lot of room, i would stay from renault unless you like really high mechanic bills

That happened to my cousins Vectra recently too. Its a small plug in resistor that goes, seems fairly common from searches.
