Sounds simple doesn't it? My VCR has finally expired. I have an non sub SKY box and want a HDD of some sort to record. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, indeed cheaper the better. Can anyone suggest what models/makes I should be looking for.

Does this box only output analogue via scart? How are you going to record that to a HDD?

Just checked, yep its SCARTs only. Another VCR it is then.

Or would a DVD recorder be worth picking up? Are they any good?

Just get a receiver with a built-in HDD (or at least one with USB to add an external drive).

It's before the era of the Moon Base, Flying cars, Star Ships etc we have. It used a plastic tape covered in rust, and an alloy drum spinning about 1,500 rpm synchronised to the video frame, magnetising the rust using an analogue FM carrier in the Short wave band. The colour part of signal was recorded at very low quality using a separate Medium Wave band carrier (colour under) thus used to be very blurry and not quite match the position of the B&W part of picture.

It's amazing they ever worked. Much more difficult to make than a modern recorder. Our Grandparents were very clever in a Heath Robinson/Wallace&Grommet fashion.

    Video
    Cassette
    Recorder

They used to be all the rage.

My budget is pretty much zero (well 50/70 euro) so a new integrated receiver/recorder is out of the question.

Buy another VCR or see if you can haggle with the guy on the adverts link.

Try one of those Cash converter type places, i've seen VCR's in there for about €20.
