Jim Fahy retires after 38 years service.
Jim Fahy is RTÉ's longest serving regional correspondent and an award winning radio and television documentary maker. He was appointed Western Correspondent in 1974 and Western Editor in 2005 and is based in the RTÉ regional studio in Galway.

    - Born: Kilrickle (Loughrea) Co. Galway 1946.
    - Worked as a journalist with the Tuam Herald newspaper from 1965 to 1974.
    - As RTÉ's first Western Correspondent he developed and presented the Looking West radio series which attempted to capture the west of Ireland's great story tradition and its 19th and 20th century social history.

    - In 1984 he was awarded a Jacobs Award for the 400 programmes in the series which ran from 1977 to 1987.

In addition to working as regional correspondent in the West of Ireland for more than 30 years, he has also been involved in many overseas news and documentary assignments.

    - Winner of over 30 national and international awards for radio and television documentaries; these have ranged from a documentary with Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1979) to profiles of the Irish-American victims of the 9/11 attack on New York in 2001.

I grew up watching Jim Fahy on RTE News, I always thought he was an excellent reporter! I hope he enjoys his retirement.

He seems to have been around forever. Thats a good haul of awards. Jim will be missed - another one lost to this early retirement scheme?

Yeah, 38 years is a long time. Jim is 65 so he would have been due to retire this year anyway! However, there are lots in RTE who manage to hang on for years after their 65th birthday:rolleyes:
