that doesn't sound right, it's usually the same as signing for the dole every month.

You sign once a year for credits. It may not be Dec 2012 as offices would have a set date/time-frame when they request people with credit claims to come in to sign on. Obviously if you are employed at any stage you have to notify sw and your credit claim will be closed and if you are unemployed again you make a repeat credit claim.

that was the way it was for me a few years ago and since 2008 (I think) they made new rule saying you had to prove that you are available and genuinely seeking work.

Maybe if your a certain age then only signing once a year is permitted.

You have to be available and seeking work... that is one of the conditions for claiming credits. And you only have to sign once a year (age has no relevance).

My wife has been out of work (activly seeking) for over 2 years and is not in receipt of any payments as we are about 5 euro over the means amount.

She has never signed for credits or anything like that since her last payment.
Is there any downside to not signing for credits or should I get her to head into the welfare office and sort it out?

She should sign for credits... credits come into play for entitlement to pension.

Was this always the case going back to around 2007/8 because it certainly wasn't in my case. I had to sign on monthly to claim credits.

I dont know about 2007/2008 but I do know for definite that last year and this year it is once a year. I would presume the reason it is now once a year is because of the high volume of jsa/jsb signers every month since the recession hit.
