Do you discriminate due to post count?

Do you reckon post counts or join dates (which are probably more relevant) affect your interpretation of a user's comments? I tend to find that recently registered users are pretty unfunny and have an abysmal grasp of grammar rules. Maybe there's an acclimatising period where you adapt yourself and your style of communication to the online forum, after which you know how to conduct yourself a bit more effectively?

In general, it seems that the most thanked posts typically stem from users who've had a bit of time to acquaint themselves with boards and how things operate here. Sometimes, I find that a choice of username can be telling; plenty of numbers or complete forenames and surnames can act as a warning beacon for the following post.

I could ask the same about mods or admins, do you trust/appreciate their opinions and ideas more simply because they hold a bit more 'status' on our little online community?

PS. I am slightly hungover so there is a chance I could be talking absolute ring but please be so kind as to suffer me gladly!

PSS. Knowing AH users, I'm gonna pre-empt the inevitable blastings with piss and the incredibly witty 'I don't really care for OP's post because he's online been here since 2005'.

There's one particular poster on one of the forums on boards that I use, and the more posts he writes the more you realise he's a complete knob and everything he writes is crap....................so post count means nothing to me

To be honest I notice the post before the poster. If the post is something I find interesting and/or funny, or on the flip side, completely abhorrent, then I check who posted it.

The 'Ignore Poster' feature is your new friend so. ;)

I've seen a few posters who have been here since 2001 and have about 12 posts. when those dudes say something, you *know* its important. I saw a guy with a 98 join date whose first posts, in 2009, was to slag off twink. That must have been bubbling under for a long time.

I tend to pay more attention to those who've been here a while, simply because pretty much every topic has been discussed to death many times since I've been here. I know the folks who've been here as long as me are as sick of those topics as I am so are less likely to make the same old arguments. Its just the nature of the beast tho, no disrespect to the newbies. anyone who joined post 2007 is a noob to me ;)

Trouble with the ignore posts feature is that the ignoree can still quote posts from the ignorer often without their knowledge.

That's sadly rampant on Boards! OP I have a lower than average count for my join date. I'm still always right though despite my stats. :)

Yes. And it depends on the specific form too. Here, a high post count is usually a very successful troll or shill.

In a science or military forum, it's usually the sign of genuine knowledge, experience and friendship.

If your join date is today, you have more than 5 posts in the last 10 minutes and are posting links, yer gettin' banned.

Otherwise, its about content, not numbers. Some of the high post count users on this thread I have not noticed before and I have no opinion on - they will be taken on their merits. However, if post count multiplied by time is taken into account and they haven't been banned, then its an indicator they aren't a complete muppet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 955 ✭✭✭Scruffles

definitely not post count discriminative-am not able to recognise & understand numbers and only discriminate based on the truth of what the user writes; if they are BSing about themselves or other serious things often am not willing to read anything they write.
-am new to boards but grammar/spelling/language are issues through disabilities not forum newbieness.
built up regular but mild/moderate brain injury had affected grammar and spelling as it did used to be better, and medication at night can affect it at that time as well.

people have often said use a spelling checker first but we do not all have the same needs just because we have difficulties-mine requires support IRL to go through each step because of high complex needs through autism and learning disability.

there is always a reason why peoples posts may not look word perfect-
newbieness is probably the least cause,so many things can affect someones post.

so we can throw things at those with higher post counts, stick chewing gum in their hair, screech to each other in painfuly high pitch tones, act incredibly 'hard' and play awful tinny music out loud on mobile phones?
woud have thought itd work the other way around.

Just judge on the post and not post count but I think people that have been around for a while tend to be better at using the place plus you often know a bit about their views which makes it easier to put what they say in context.

I too would like to be able to switch off post count in the settings...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 135 ✭✭Mikel91

I joined early 2007 and had about a four thousand post count but recently deleted my account and then said feck it and came back and made this one.

What op said is my biggest fear

I used to think this myself, because it causes the moronic few with higher counts to be obnoxious towards new members. Though it can be a useful at-a-glance tool to sniff out trolls. Your previous posts should prove you're not only around to cause shyte.

I then thought, what if counts and join dates were only viewable to mods and admin, but the established users assist by reporting suspected trolls, so the pro's out weigh the cons in keeping the counts visible.

I knew someone on another forum who had a post count of 150 per day

I just read the most thanked posts in threads

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,762 ✭✭✭✭stupidusername

The only reason I would take any notice is if the post count is around 10 or less, then I would be wary of the post. otherwise nah, who gives a ****. there's plenty of people with high post count, or early join date that talk bull**** all the time and annoy the **** out of people.

On a forum like boards it doesn't really matter imo, however on say a poker/gambling forum it does as you're dealing with money.

post count no, join date yes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 709 ✭✭✭Robdude

Both are pretty meaningless - unless you want to talk about 1-5 post spammers.

Having a high post count means you have more free time/type faster/feel like you have more to say that most. None of that says anything about the quality of your posts.

Join date is just as meaningless. I've been on (all but) identical sites for years. There isn't anything so unique or special about Boards.ie that it takes months of understanding to fit in. It's just another message board.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34,418 ✭✭✭✭hondasam

I don't think post count matters and I think it's unfair when posters are singled out because of their post count.
My high post count has been mentioned more than once and people have made assumptions about me based on that.
I would turn of post count if it was available.

Post count and join date don't matter to me. What someone says in a post is what matters. As someone I had the privilege to work for once said. "Even when it's the wrong person that says the right thing, it's still the right thing.":):):)

Lol I probably have the lowest post count on this thread so far.
But thats merely because it has taken me a lot of time to go from observing what others say and how discussions are conducted to actually taking the plunge and saying something myself.!
Also I like my input to be valid and mean something. I dont plan on posting mindlessly just to have a high PC.
I would likenot to wreck peoples heads and hopefully have meaningful and coherent discussions with others :D:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,930 ✭✭✭Jimoslimos

I'm one of those posters with a lowish post count to an oldish (middle aged) join-date ratio. So yeah, I'd love if join-date was the most important factor. In reality, unless it's a pre-2000 join date I'd say most people never notice.

Also I reckon there's thousands of old spammer/shill accounts lying dormant ready to be activated

No. In general, if I need to respond to something someone said, I respond to that. What I have done, sometimes, is when someone posts something troll-ish or personally insulting, I have a look at their previous posts. If they have a history of such behaviour, there's no point responding to them at all.

Focus on the issue, not on the person, and all that. If you get personal - and that includes judging a poster by their post count - it means you don't have anything to add to the topic.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Don't take my post count away.

Each of my posts represents the hours, well ok minutes, of intense concentration and then, hovering over the Submit button, existential doubt.

How many posts have been typed and deleted before submission?

Well the same chap sets himself up as an expert on everything the whole time so I just love to see him getting knocked off his perch lol (me bad lol)
