    From sky sports

Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke's achievements on the golf course have been recognised in the New Year Honours list.
U.S. Open champion McIlroy receives and MBE, while fellow Ulsterman Clarke gets and OBE after winning The Open at Royal St. George's.

2011 was McIlroy's best year yet, finishing the season 3rd in the world rankings. He tweeted:

"Very humbled to receive an MBE in the New Year Honours list. What a great way to end an incredible year... Hopefully the best is yet to come."

Bah Humbug! Yea, great for the guys to get 'recognised' but the Honours list is a complete load of hogwash these days. They're chosen by politicians - I'm not even sure the queen gets a say - and there are so many being dished out that the purpose and value of such Honours has been lost... to the point it actually diminishes the really worthwhile ones. Wait until the Olympics is done and dusted - the Honours list will be huge for that one.

I'm far more interested by the people who actually turn them down... sadly, there isn't a list of those.

Was watching the NY Eve show on RTE last night and they showed a re-run of the year's highlights, showing Rory lifting the US Open... forgot to show Clarke lifting the British Open

Idiots... there was about 12 clips of that eejit Enda Kenny making "living way beyond our means" type quotes...

Peter Alliss turned them down. Something to do with the treatment of WW2 veterans.

That I didn't know! Peter Alliss has gone way up in my opinion... and I already love the guy.

All Black Richie McCaw has refused to accept his Honour... says he's too young at 30 to be called 'Sir Ritchie'... evidently Rory doesn't have the same hang-ups. That said, I'm sure Rory will probably be cool about the whole thing, and will never be as big a twazzock as Nick Faldo about being called 'Sir'

Of coarse the title "Sir" only apply's to people who are awarded a knighthood, So rory will have to wait a bit for that title, as OBE, MBE and CBE aren't knights!
